I am going to attend some outdoor activities. So I decide to buy a pocket knife, my first one. Ok, Ok, that is an excuse, I love knives and I like those things with cool and powerful feelings. I did some research online about the blade material, handle material, blade lock, etc. Here are the candidates I chosen. Since this is my first knife, I don't have a big budget, about $50.

1. Buck Catapult, Black Thermoplastic Handle, Black Blade, Plain;

2. Buck Knife - SBMF Strider/Buck Military Folder Black Bld OD Green Han;

3. Kershaw Mini Cyclone, Black/white Blade, ComboEdge;

4. SOG Flash II, Zytel Handle, Plain;

5. Gerber AR 3.00 Black, Plain;

6. Buck Catapult, Black Thermoplastic Handle, Black Blade, Plain;

7. Camillus Knife - CUDA Every Day Carry EDC Serrated;

8. Benchmade Mini-Ambush 10210SB;

9. Spyderco Endura 4 C10PSFG ComboEdge

10. Kershaw Junkyard Dog II Plain

which one is the best???

Thanks a lot!

Regards,

Frank

I can't really say which one is the "best", but I think the Spyderco Endura gives you the most for your money.

Good luck,
Allen

I second the Spyderco Endura and also recommend the Benchmade Griptilian. Both fine knives right about in your budget.

Out of that list, I would encourage you to choose either: One of the Kershaw's (both if you can afford 'em), the Benchmade or the Spyderco.

Can't go wrong with the Endura, a quality knife that fits nicely into your budget:thumbup:

At the risk of expanding your list, you might consider the Spyderco Native III. It has a 3" VG10 blade, (better steel than AUS8). It is comfortable in the hand and pocket. I keep hearing issues with the standard S30V Native chipping. A few do most don't. The Native III with VG10 just does not.

Hard to say "best". My preference of the ones you have listed is the mini-ambush. Decent steel. Nice shape. Good lock. AUS8 takes a very good edge.

Runner up is the Junkyard Dog II. I don't have one. But I have read some extremely positive comments from people that do.

I'd steer clear of Gerber. They seem to have a lot of issues these days.

I think that overall a plain edge will suit you better than a combo edge. There are a few people that like combo edges. The majority feel they are worse than either a full serrated or a full plain edge.

The only knife on your list I would strongly recommend against is the Buck Catapult with the thermoplastic handle. Thermoplastic is just a fancy name for plastic, and as a handle material, IMHO, is total junk.

FRN is thermoplastic. So are a number of other engineering plastics.
The Endura, Native and a bunch of other well regarded knives have thermoplastic handles.

The question is what thermoplastic was used. Knowing Buck, I doubt that the handle is unsuitable for its intended use. They have always been very good about such details.

thanks for all your suggestions. I checked the "Spyderco C78PBK NativeIII Plain" and it looks really nice. I love that one! It has the VG-10 3" blade, which has been recommended by knarfeng! thanks, I probably will go for that one! thanks again!

Good choice. I like the Delica better, but to each his own, and the Native is an excellent knife.

Spydercos and Kershaws are what i'd recommend...
can't go wrong with the JYD2 or the Endura..... :thumbup:
