A Rusting Buck?

I think my 105 is rusting, there are spots along the blade that I cant scrub off. It's a newer one, as I got it for christmas this year, and up until recently I've hardly used it. Since I got a job at the beach, I've been using it frequently, but today while sharpening/cleaning it I noticed the spots. Is it normal for them to rust? Isnt it stainless? I'd appreciate any tips on removing it(I was going to try scrubbing with steel wool, but didnt want to damage the blade), or how to prevent it. Thanks guys.

BEACH !!!!!!! as in "SALT "water.....stainless will rust, clean with mineral oil, polish rust with Flitz, then apply Flitz Rifle / Gun Wax... good for six weeks or six months of protection .Wipe your knife and dry and your sheath when you get away from the beach, hair drier works good to dry 'em out .... your spouse will give you funny stares.

Yes, stainless = stains less. Most will rust if not cared for, ie, used around saltwater and not cleaned/cared for. Make sure you clean and dry the blade, don't leave it in the sheath as the leather will absorb moisture. If your not using the blade for food prep use a gun oil like CLP, Rem Oil or Breakfree.

As for removing the rust now, I would try Flitz or Brasso...depends on how deep the rust has gone. You might have to use a fine sandpaper or a buffing compound and this will alter the grind lines on the blade so you'll have to do the entire blade. Perhaps others will have suggestions, I'm in a dry climate and don't have that to contend with. Good luck, Preston

I MUST HAVE NODDED OFF...EVIL EYE EARL TYPES FAST.

Thanks guys, I've replaced the 105 with a cheap folder I had for years, so I wouldnt further damage it. There are only a few specks of rust, so it shouldnt be too hard to fix. Is there a way to clean the leather sheath? I dont think leather is supposed to get wet, but I want to get the sand and salt out of there. Any idea?

The leather is treated/tanned and will take getting wet...to a certain extent...what that is depends. I would say that Buck uses leather that has been well treated and has for me withstood many trips in the woods during rain and snow. I always would dry and re-treat the sheath after getting wet.

I would clean and dry(if not already). Make sure that the inside is clear of all grit, sand and dirt...you might have to use a bristle brush inside, maybe a poly gun brush. Just make sure that all the abrasive particles are gone(the nap of the leather inside will collect crap like you wouldn't believe:eek:). I would then use a good leather cleaner/conditioner, Bicks or Properts inside and out. Maybe Snow Seal if it's going to be getting really wet. Good Luck, Preston

A little fyi, a general rule of thumb is that as you go up the ladder in stainless steel performance your rust resistance drops accordingly.

You might see if your scotch brite from the kitchen will remove the spots. We actually use the same thing, in the form of a wheel, to give them their finish.
As the previous poster noted, the better the stainless, bg-42, ats-34, ect. the faster it will rust. Thats one of the trade-offs.
Your 105 is probably 420HC though but a nice protective layer of the kind mentioned in this thread should help prevent future rust.

Hmmmm...Have to check the catalogs; see who has ScotchBrite wheels with a 5/8" hole... :)

...A...search of the forums popped these comments up about restoring blade finishes...

But now we have it from the horses' mouth (I hope I have the right end :D ) that it's ScotchBrite...not bead blasting; not fine sandpaper; not a Brillo pad (or xxxx steel wool), but a ScotchBrite wheel... ;)

Maybe now we can duplicate the factory finish... :p
