Or at least that's what I make out the highly-stylized writing to say. :)

This newly belongs to a friend of a friend. Basically, just looking for your thoughts on whether it's genuine---I know there are some great replicas of Civil War era swords out there, but not sure about this one with the 1874 date. The thing that jumps out at me is that the brass and PARTICULARLY the leather look too good to be a century and a half old, but I also am not a guru and promised the owner that I'd present it to more knowledgable people. I don't think he wants to sell it, just curious if it's genuine.

Any info would be highly appreciated, he's very excited about it. :D

The sword is just as inscribed and a model 1822. The U.S. regulation swords often adopted themes from other countries. So, one has mostly French influenced swords in use by both forces during the civil war.

Condition is a matter of many variables. That is a nice sword of the French/German conflict years.

Cheers

Thank you! Bladeforums was supposed to email me when/if I got a reply but it didn’t. I will pass along the good news—as I told him, I’m not a sword guy, but I know where some hang out. 🙂
