My Axe needed new scales.... :)! The Axe Hammer is one of my favorite all around user blade however, it only come with G10 handles. So this Memorial day weekend I set out to rescale my beast! When it's all said and done it will have red liners and tube fasteners. Let me know what you guys think.

Micarta just has a much warmer feel to it. I wish Busse would do more multi color, layered micarta.

I'll let the pictures do the talking. This is before:

Ahhhh...
"The touch
The feel
Of Micarta
The handle of our knives."
......someone has to remember that commercial.
Awesome job brother! I voted micarta if you couldn't tell.

Very nice mod. I like your choice of color.

I prefer micarta for the warm feel.

Absolutely awesome transformation! I love the new scales--they give that knife a whole other look. Although most of my Busses are G10 (the luck of the secondary market), the one I like the feel of most is micarta... and that would me my first Busse, the TGLB...

Nice work absolutely Micarta. Once I have worked with both, I could clearly see that it is the more durable material also.

Hoot.....I knew someone would get it.
Good catch brother. I see clamp caught it too. Sounds much better when you sing it to that jingle tune. Too funny.

I like G10 because it rarely ever shows dirt and its just about bullet proof. Now that said, I would chose Micarta time and time over G10 for a knife I intend on doing any real work with. It has a grabbier, softer feel to it. It can be cleaned with a degreaser and toothbrush, it does not feel as hard as G10 and when you are using it does not make the hot spots as bad. I think this is due to the fact that it grips better. They are both great to use for scales. Chopper would be micarta all the way, EDC knife G10 in my favorite colors. Oh yes the colors, G10 colors just really pop. Micarta a bit more subdued. I have fallen in love with the Jade G10 thats out now. Just got a few sheets into my shop and will be using that on some knives later this year. Might rescale a Busse with a set once I get the CNC program completed. I want them to look original as possible.

Really came out nice now I can see it lol. Before I was not able to see the pictures. I am not able to see them with our school internet. Just curious, what method did you use to take out the tubes and keep the original scales in such good condition. I have been thinking about doing the exact same thing, but I am worried about destroying the originals. Any info would be highly appreciated.

Thanks for the kind words. I'm really loving it and can't wait to get back in the shop to add the red liners and tube fasteners.

I use a 1/2 inch bit in the press and a little wd40. Go slow and make sure the tube doesn't spin. Hope this helps.

OK thank you, much appreciated, added to my knowledge base.

She came out looking GORGEOUS!!!

I go back and forth between G10 and Micarta. I've been on a complete Micarta kick lately.

Beautiful work on the scales.
As for my preference, I'll always take G10, given a choice. Both for looks and for feel. Once I got my first Busse sculpted G10, I never looked back. Except when the maroon micarta returned. I took a couple of O2W knives in that. By it is about the only micarta I'd consider over G10, given a choice. Bottom line, though, is that none are deal breakers.

I'm pretty sure you mean 1/4" bit. Also you want to be very sure the knife is held secure while drilling out tube fasteners. There are some horror stories out there and even pictures in this forum of someone after severe abdominal lacerations caused by drilling fasteners at work bench height and letting a knife get away and spin wildly on the end of a drill. I always drill the fasteners from the left side of the knife so that if somehow it does spin, the non sharpened side would be hitting things instead of the sharp side.

1/2 inch what was I thinking?!?! Haha thanks for the correction.

Nice work kniferMan.
I have to agree with Ladams regarding having micarta on large choppers and G10 on EDC blades. I think the pattern and depth of the milled texture also plays a role. For example, G10 is slicker, however, if you have an aggressive cut like on a SAR it's still grippy. IMHO of course.
