My stepmother who is now age 70 told a story the other night as the family was gathered for dinner.

When she had just gotten divorced from her first husband around 35 years ago, she was wanting a Christmas tree to put up for her and my two step brothers. Well the divorce had wiped her out financially so she decided to just go out in the back yard and cut down a long needle pine to decorate.

Well not having a saw of any kind she remembered her Vic SAK that she had bought for camping. She found her SAK and went out in the yard and started cutting this pretty good size tree. It took her a pretty good while but with sheer determination she finally got that tree cut down with that SAK.

She still had that knife and brought it out to show us. It was something along the lines of a Hiker.

Just goes to show you, an SAK is like an old faithful friend who's always there when you need it and never lets you down.

A few years back, one of the guys I play music with was in a similar, divorce-induced financial pinch. We were playing a Christmas party gig and as we were packing up, someone from the company that had hired us told my buddy that they were just going to pitch the tree decorated and propped up in the corner. With the help of me (and my SAK to cut loose the cordage holding the tree upright), we loaded it out to his car and sent him on his way. His two little girls had a great Christmas with their dad.

I think simple is better for Christmas. I can appreciate a heavily decorated tree, but I suspect your stepmother's tree was decorated pretty simply. She has always remembered that tree and the effort it took to have a tree for her family. I guess a folding saw would have come in handy.

We used to go to a Christmas Tree farm to cut our own tree. That was always a fun day. As a kid, we often cut our own tree down in the woods. As we grew older, us kids planted pine trees expressly for the purpose of cutting down at Christmas. These were always small pine trees we found in the woods, dug out and transplanted. Nice memories.

Nice, thanks for sharing

Great story and a lesson on how a SAK can endow you with a little self reliability in the real world.

Sometimes having just a few basic tools can make a difference. And a SAK will give you those small tools. They may be small, but with a little patience they will work for you.

So true. I have Spydercos, Benchmades etc but mostly find myself just happily carrying a plain old Victorinox Spartan nowadays.
