A Sebenza Question?

I recently acquired a Large Sebenza through a trade with a member here. The Sebenza was represented to be from 1998, new in the box etc. etc. They said it was a Classic but it’s a Regular one- which I figured was an oversight (They aren't an active knife collector).

I listed the Sebenza on eBay.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220178543870&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123

The Buyer responded today:

“Received the Chris Reeve knife today. The knife is not the original. It is dated C 03 Also the finish looks sandblasted as if not done by by Chris Reeve. Please tell me what is going on.You have very good feed back that happened here.”

Got me- are there really date codes on the knives? If so where? I’ve only seen 2 other Sebenzas and the handles all looked the same?

I responded for the Buyer to return the knife to me in the condition shipped and I will refund all their money.

I just listed what I was told so my question is- is there anyway to clearly and properly identify the knife so I can properly list it for resale?

Thanks Mitch

Dates are on the inside of the scales. Sometimes they are visible (to folks with good eyes!) at an angle looking inside, without disassembly.
If only one scale (proper name for the side without lock escapes me) is dated 03, and the other is 96, then probably CRK replaced it due to some type of damage (perhaps?).
Others can probably speculate better than I... but I'm curious what dates are if you don't mind posting pics etc.

I bought a new Sebenza (from a reputable dealer, so I have no question as to the provenance of the knife) and one side says A05 and the other B06. I assume they machine the parts and assemble them not paying attention to the date codes.

Also CRK handle finish has varied over the years some nearly satin to a course "flinty" finish. The condition looks good, but yeah looks like somebody got the date cards switch at some point.

I'd list it as 2003, regular, and toss the date code.

I recently traded for a knife that was listed as BG-42 from a dealer site that had 03 date codes. Wishful thinking on the dealer probably in my case.

DaveH, Gotta love the BG-42 models. I am currently collecting all of the "older" Sebbies I can find. I just can't get enough of those.

Thanks for the info! I never knew that about the date codes.

Also I believe the blade will have an "S" on it if it is a s30v model. This is a dead givaway that the knife is a later model.

There has been another change in blade markings, recently. I`ve only received back my large Classic after sending it in for a refurb, about 5 weeks ago. I also had CRK fit a serrated edge for my Sebenza.
This new blades sports a "C", which got me wondering. So I emailed Heather, and she told me that now the Classic blades sport a "C", and the Regular blades sport an "S" (for standard).

Probably not much use for the original posters question, but I just happened to remember it when I saw your post.......... . ;)

When the Classic blades sport a "C", last year or this year?
Thanks.

I just received my large regular, born on Dec 13 2007, and it has an unmarked blade (at least, no marking visible without disassembly).

You have to disasemble to see any of the markings. They are under the bronze bushings.
