I have had a real interest in stainless Spyderco’s ever since I got my first one the Police from another member on here Stabman. Some people like synthetic scales due to the light weight and grippiness. Personally I like to feel the weight of the blade in my pocket and have never had one slide out of my hand. Perhaps my hands are a little more moist than others? Well after the police I came across the Harpy and then the one I have been searching for the Rookie which were both bought used. My favorite is by far the police in VG-10. Last year I picked up the byrd Cara Cara 2 which I was a little sceptical of, made in China with an unknown steel to me but it was priced right. I am very satisfied with it and am quite surprised at how well the steel holds up to task. I farm so it gets hard use. It does not chip like the ATS-55 on ther Rookie which I only carry on occasion like picinics…etc. Being so happy with the byrd I ordered a meadowlark 2 and am pleased with how well it is designed with the little finger choil that the delica lacks. I think what drew me to the byrd line is that they are cheap and if something happens to one I wont cry. As for the Harpy I do carry it on occasion and it is great for making jagged cuts in just about everything. It gets dull very quickly. By the way I carry them all tip down.

The only thing is the handles get so scratched up so I normally use a power sander to put a rough finish on them. I should also add, in my opinion the byrd series are certainly not as nicely finished as the original. I find they need some work with stones and files to remove some edges but I do enjoy that kind of thing.

I don’t have any steel handle Spyders, yet I can appreciate them. Also I prefer to carry tip down :)

I'll always give a thumbs up for a Spyderco Rookie!
Its funny, I searched for a rookie for years and finally found one in as new condition. Tell you the truth its actually a litte underwhelming. Sort of one of those blades that I really don’t have a use for but am very glad to own one. I wonder how many were made in it’s short run?

Going to be carrying my stainless handle, fully serrated Spyderco Police today. :)

The Byrd knives are pretty good.
Generally I prefer G-10 over stainless, so I bought one of the small G-10 handle Byrd knives before heading to Chicago back in 2018.
When I got back, my wife thought it was cute, and claimed it as her own! :D
Recently had to sharpen it for her, but it's held its edge quite well really.

If memory serves, I read that Sal said steel was good for making inexpensive prototypes. It sounded counterintuitive as I’d figure meal is much more expensive than plastics but maybe the real cost for plastic and resin etc is the molds, I don’t know.

I personally like some texture on the handle but can see the aesthetic of the steel, plus it has history.

My issue with most Spyderco knives is I dislike the mid-lock, I find it clumsy to use, but they have plenty of liner locks as well.
