A Sheath for a Koster Bushcraft?

First, I just found this forum. Cool!

I just picked up a Koster Bushcraft in D-2, and I'm considering a sheath for it. No offense to Dan, but I really didn't like the sheath he had for it. The primary use for the knife will be kitchen duty, but I don't want to drop it in the drawer without some type of protection. I don't want to put it in the block either, as I don't want Sandy grabbing it and using it on that infernal glass cutting board she loves so much! We camp a lot, so I'm sure it will see some travel and general camp chores (belt loop needed). I've got a older Bianchi that fits it, but I'm not 100% sure about leather and D-2. I'm no fan of kydex either.

If anyone can point me in any number of appropriate directions, I'd appreciate it!

I like a design that is a simple foldover pouch sheath, possibly with a welt, and open far enough on the welt side to have a snap to close just behind the guard. If I remember where I saw the picture, I'll add a link to it.

Something like this?

That's a VERY nice combo.
I love the way the edge runs all the way up to the handle.
..extra serrations for the thumb
The sheath is superb!
Does it have a beltloop on the back, or is it dangler only?

I got the opportunity to meet Dan at Blade and known him since he started knifemaking, a nicer person you'll not likely meet. :)

I should have bought one of those Bushcraft blades he showed me at Blade, regret is my montra. :p

Dont worry about leather too much, if you get a quality sheath made it will have the best leather available of which most of the tannins (tanning salts) will not be present. I have stored 1095 blades for months at a time in leather with no ill effects. BUT, if they get damp you will have problems. Keep em dry and dont worry, any sheath will rust a blade if its wet.

Drawer storage opens a whole different worry, the above sheath shows how you want to do it, protect that handle from damage form flying metal. If you open and close drawers like my family does then you'll want the extra protection of a high coverage sheath. :D

Thanks to all that responded.

leatherman, thanks for the info. I take good care of all my knives, regardless of what they are. Since it's only Sandy and me in the home now, she's the only one I have to worry about. But since I do most of the food prep and cooking here, I'll just have to train her on the proper care of this knife. The Bianchi I have covers most all of the handle. I'll make do with that one until I can find something better!

ilbruche, that combination is beautiful!

I've ordered one of his Bushcraft blade blanks...can't wait to get that baby...have some Bocote waiting on it too....:)

After seeing pics of the Bushmaster I'm going to have to get one of those with matching Blue/Black Micarta scales.

Post up spme pics when you're done rayban!

Got one coming in too.
the regular Bushie in CPM 3V and natural canvas.
I'll be making some sheaths for it.
sleek & lightweight kydex & leather together..

Martin, that will be interesting to see. Two questions: will they have belt loops and do you plan on doing leather over the kydex or some sort of combo? I really don't like the look of kydex...

I send you a PM..

but yes, I form the kydex around the blade, and haldftanned leather around the kydex. You won't see any kydex. These sheaths will have beltloops. There are several setups to choose from.
You will find some of my work elsewhere in this forum..

Yup it has a belt loop as well. The D is stitched tight up top. It's an easy way to easily secure your sheath.

Be sure to post it over on Rammy when you're done.

Heck...I'll post it on every forum that hasn't kicked me off yet....:jerkit:

Don Vito...with my respects of course....ask Koster if he has any of those Koster Knife Kit blanks left...I call it KKK for short...maybe not a good idea huh?

Not that this is a great pattern for kitchen use, here's what I made for my Bushie from Koster:

SPXtrader,
After the beautiful leather pics finally loaded, I realized this may look a little cheesy and I know you said you don't care for Kydex but, this provides excellent protection and it will not slide off when being handled. This is the only one that ever stays in the kitchen so - the only one I ever need be concerned about. It's .080" Kydex and is quite rigid. I have since added two rivets just because it looked better. I have Koster Bushcraft blade in 3V and two finished Bushcrafts in O1 coming my way in the near future but they will get "real" sheaths - this is more of a "slip."

Martin,
That will be interesting to see. I have a Bushcraft coming from Dan (sometime), and will be looking for a sheath as well. I've always been intrigued by the combo of kydex and leather. Doesn't that make the sheath pretty bulky, though?

Raindog.

Using not too thick a kydex and a single stitchline it will be comparable to the sheath shown above, when you think away the rivets, and a stitchline instead, it'll probably be a bit slimmer even.

I'll show you when it's done, and that will be at least a month from now.
Gotto do some more Howler's and RMD's first .. :)

Martin,
So, no rivets in the kydex? Is the leather stitching all that's holding that kydex congruent to the blade (look, I used my big word for the day!)? And if so, would the kydex fit loosen over time, as the leather stretches? And, in a related question, is the kydex a two-piece, or a single piece folded over? Sorry to pester with these questions, but I am curious...
