These two paintings hang on the walls of the Himalayan Horizon hotel. This hotel sits alone atop a very high ridge from which you get a great view of the Himalayas off to the north and east. It sits on the road that will take you from the Kathmandu Valley to the Solu region of the Himalayas where the Sherpas live. Yangdu and I often stopped at this hotel when we were traveling toward the Solu. At that time it was a little dirty, pretty poor food, but cheap and with that stunning view. It has changed considerably for the better since I was there last.

So, the gal on the left with cigarette in hand is a Sherpa in typical dress but she's wearing too much jewelry for day to day chores. The gal on the right is a Magar, same clan as Vikash who ships your khukuris, and same story about her jewelry. Interesting to me was I felt the carved wood frames were perhaps more artistic than the paintings they housed.

Anybody feel the same?

I agree. I try to look more at the skill and feelings put into a piece of work whether it be wood, steel, or any other medium of art, and in these wooden frames I see an exceptional amount of skill and beauty to their carvings. Very beautiful.
