A shocking dose of sanity in the media!

A recent article by Gerri Willis on CNN/Money about preparing to deal with a terrorist attack tells readers that "it's always a good idea to carry a flashlight. You can buy little key chain flashlights that have an LED light. And you should also think about investing in a pocketknife."

Read the whole thing here.

Wait a minute... is it April 1 already??? ;)

Just read it. Surprisingly rational article. I was impressed.

Now if you can get them to advocate owning a gun as part of your emergency kit...

If you've ever seen the kit the government recommends you put together at ready.gov, you'll notice that one thing is conspicuously absent - a firearm. I believe the list was put together by the Red Cross, which many say explains why they don't recommend a firearm.

Edited to add: looks like the government doesn't even advocate a SAK in the kit.

Now you're REALLY in April Fool's territory!

Well we cant have sheep running around shooting things , can we ?
Seriously though this was the first thoought running in my head , CNN puts out that article , saying it might be a good idea to invest a pocketknife. Joe and/or Jane Nimrod go out and buy a pocketknife and totally spaz out (cuz they have never had such a "dangerous weapon" in thier possession before) and they cut themselves good and deep and have to get stitches and wind up suing CNN for "pain and trauma" who settle for 100k just to shut 'em up.

Cant ya just see it ??

We can but hope that the media (and in their wake the "masses") are actually waking up to the fact that Wolves eat sheep, and in a closed loop they will eat ALL the sheep, leaving nothing but wolves. If the choices are between being a sheep or a wolf, I'm off to sharpen my "teeth" !

The ready.gov list originally contained a note from the Red Cross explaining that they specifically recommended _against_ including a knife, because they figured the danger of somebody getting injured outweighed any potential benefit. "So there's been a crippling attack, and you're without basic services and need to fend for yourself temporarily... But you should be so scared of injury that you don't handle anything more powerful than Nerf!"

IIRC, they eventually broke down and buried "can opener/multi-purpose knife" down at the bottom of the list. Not at all surprising to hear that it's been removed.

The "sheeple" perspective is that when the "wolves" are the threat, you banish the wolves and get a good shepherd. The Founding Fathers were smart enough to realize that, given free reign, shepherds eat their sheep.

Well..... They would probably eat them AFTER!

That's funny. Imagine you need to cut rope or seatbelts or clothing - these things are likely. They also recommend keeping duct tape and plastic in your kit. I guess they expect you to whip out the old car keys or your teeth to cut these things.

They recommend "Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food)". No mention of a knife that I can see.

They may as well recommend keeping lip balm around - that way you can kiss your ass goodbye.

You don't need a knife in your emergency kit.

(you should have one in your pocket all the time anyway)

Point taken. They were profoundly suspicious of government, having recently experienced using massive levels of deadly force to defeat the government and it's supporters.

But as individuals we have no "shepherds." You are responsible for your protection. All you can hope for if you fail, is that government will avenge your injury and punish the wrong-doer (which may help the next guy).

The founding fathers were smart enough to understand that you can't trust the government _or_ the people. They realized that, given the power to do so, any ruling group would quickly turn into selfish dictators. So they built a system based on constant conflict between groups, in which the governmental power is split between multiple factions, all of whom can limit the powers of the others. Any branch (including the electorate) will stab you in the back the moment you trust 'em too far. That's why we can't just settle abortion or gay marriage by referendum; the minority must be protected from the selfishness of the majority. That's why we can't let government prisons ignore habeus corpus writs; you can't trust them to only hold the "bad guys". That's why we couldn't give up the Second Amendment even if it _would_ make the country safer; we can't trust the government with a monopoly on force.

People I know were shocked when the Supreme Court recently reaffirmed the fact that the police don't have a responsibility to protect citizens from harm. Most gun-control advocates don't seem to think past the reflex-meme of "that's a job for the police".

Wow, I had no idea the Supreme Court has stated that... very interesting. I'll have to hold onto that piece of info for future conversations with anti-personal-responsibility people that I'm associated with...

By any chance, would you have a link to that ruling, so I can document it and have factual backing?

For you, me, or likely anyone else on this board, I agree. But the people who will not learn how to operate their guns and practice with them, shouldn't have them as anything but keepsakes. If CNN or the gov wants to cover their donkeys in not recommending a gun in an emergency kit, I understand.
