The rear shock on my KLR crapped out, so my buddy Tom is riding up to bring me a replacement he had on hand (from LA - 8 hours). Great guy. Of course, I immediately thought about what knife to give him. My green SBJ (Kawi green?). I even considered my backup bladeforum EO jack. See, here's the thing about Tom. Like any respectable man, he loves Old Timers. And he is (literally) a rocket scientist. He appreciates well used and well cared for tools.

I have had this knife for years. Picked it up for a song as it was "worn out". I have sharpened it and loved it. As did someone who used it and cared for it for MANY years before me. I love this knife. I'm stoked to give it to someone who will appreciate it. I have lots of flashy knives, but this one just hits you in the heart. I'm used to OTs with a lot of "life left", but the care that was taken in sharpening this one...sure the sheepsfoot sits a little proud. As well it should. I never knocked it down because it didn't seem right. Gave it a final sharpen today. I figured you guys would appreciate the amazing stories and possibilities this knife inspires.

Worth much? Not to regular folk, but to people like us...well, let's just stop this before I get choked up. Cheers.

For comparison purposes (sorry for the crappy pics). I need Duncan to come shoot my collection.

She's a beauty to me! Just picked up a completely unused, unsharpened 8OT. Glad to know that it will provide many years of faithful service if i want it to.

Honestly, It's pictures like this that keep me in love with traditionals. I never get tired of seeing the companion of choice of people that used a knife as a tool and treated it well.

Thanks, me too. And that knife will outlast all of us if you treat it right. ;)

Wow, that is a great OLd Timer! Someone got their money out of that one and then some. I can't help but wonder where it's been, and what stories it can tell.

Carl.

I'm actually impressed. Normally, you see the well used ones with a recurve from repeated sharpening. It must have meant something special to someone.

Yep. That's why I love it. Whoever owned that knife knew what they were doing for damn sure. And it'll go another 20 years in Tom's hand.

(Whistle in my mind) that is one Old Timer with some stories to tell! My furthest down the line blade in the wear department is my first knife, that I have spent hours and hours honing over the years with a little stone, and it has a third at most blade worn down as your clip blade does.

Great friend btw,
Connor

Thanks guys. I offered Tom the choice of a near mint, a user with more steel, and the pictured knife (same model)...he chose right. ;) The loved Old Timer lives in a new home now.

Those Old Timers are great knives and never seem to die. I picked up four or five some 15 or so years ago (cheap) and have them dispersed (desk, work shop at home, and several tool boxes). They are probably the most used knives I own. And so easy to sharpen. :D
