I'm not a sharpening pro but always got results that satisfied me, at least for my uses. I have a small variety of steels AUS8, 1095, VG-10, ATS34/154CM, CPM 154, D2, and M390. Forty years of free hand sharpening before finding the KME. I have sets of Aluminum Oxide, Silicon Carbide, Diamonds and one Boron Carbide.

Nothing radical, 18 degrees per side was being used on everything and a quick strop to debur.

I stopped by a dealer who was trying to clear out a Benchmade Shori 483. It is a bit ugly but I thought it would make a really nice little slicer. S30V was new to me and I gave it the usual 18 DPS and finished off with a 1200 diamond. Cut a little cardboard and noticed some micro chips. Cleaned it up and tried again, same results. I mumble a few obscenities and set it aside for a good while. I picked it up recently and tried again, thinking maybe I'll get to some good steel this time. Wrong.

Isn't "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." or is that stupidity. Anyway it was time to visit Maintenance, Tinkering & Embellishment to do some much needed research.

Microbevels I've heard about those but I thought that was for those who were going down to 15 DPS or less. That certainly is not me but research is research and I had to start some where.

I read all 10 pages, Then got out the KME and took the Shori down to 17 DPS (that's as far as it will go) finished with the 1200 diamond. With the same 1200 diamond, I put a 20 DPS micro bevel on it. It takes a loupe to see it well.

Grabbed an unsuspecting cardboard box and shredded it. A hundred plus feet of cardboard later and no micro chips and it was still cutting like a champ. Then sharpened a couple feet off a small stick. No micro chips. And still cutting.

Problem solved and as a side benefit it can be touched up in a heart beat.

So thanks to all who donated knowledge to the Microbevel Sticky.

This is a great place isn't it !

As far as the limitation on the angle of the guided sharpener; that's why I have shied away from (or been disappointed by ) most of them. My Edge Pro is the exception; goes plenty shallow angle . . . that's the way I like them.

It sure is a good little slicer now. so that makes it functionally pretty. :)

With only a very few exceptions most of my knives are about the size of the Shori. A lot of Queen or Queen made 3.5" to 3.75".
I've thought about the Edge Pro or Hapstone but I'm not sure they would work on traditional knives.
On my Ritter mini, mini barrage or Rat 1 an edge pro would work great.

When your blades are thin they slice good even if I'm stuck at 17 DPS.

Yes you are right. It takes a small knife accessory to do the small knives right. I fudge a little and get by. Some day I will get around to making the accessory. It is just a card of masonite with slot in it. Still though . . . I can fudge on the Edge Pro where it is hopeless with my Aligner guided system and I wind up just using the small diamond stones free hand.

Of late I have attached the Aligner diamond plates to the Edge Pro blank aluminum plate with double backed tape. Not fun but it works. I only need to do that for my S110V and S90V I only have a couple of those.

Guide Note : placing a rubber band wound around the Edge Pro rod keeps me from pulling too far and going off the edge of the blade.
