A short walk in Wisconsin

My family and I went to Northern Wisconsin this weekend to visit family. I grew up in the north woods of WI so it was nice to go home and take a walk in the winter woods. While walking I decided to start a small fire and warm up before continuing the walk. The area has a lot of pine, birch, and oak trees. The temperature was a balmy 26 degrees.

I cleared out a small area to build my fire with my hands and feet. The snow was a little over a foot deep. I layed down a few pieces of birch bark as a bed for my fire. The bark came off of a rotten birch stump. I layed a few small pine twigs and started the fire with a cotton ball and my magnesium fire starter. The knife that I carried was my trusty Buck Nighthawk. It's not the best knife for use in the woods, I have a few others that are better, but my Nighthawk has a lot of sentimental value and I like carrying it when I'm up north.

Where about in Wisconsin were you? I'm from Barron and have some land near Cozy Corners in Douglas County.

nice. brings back memories of hayward. Still got land up there but no time lately. just had our first child a year ago and my wife is pregnant again. hopefully soon i can take the family up there.

I think the nighthawk is a great knife for the money  Buck knows how to make a decent quality low price knife.

I was near Stone Lake, WI. It's about 15 miles south of Hayward. I went to middle and high school in Hayward. I love going back to the area. I spent a lot of time in the woods growing up.

I really like my Buck Nighthawk. I got it as a gift from my brother when I was 14 or 15. It's still a great knife for the money.
