My family and I went to Northern Wisconsin this weekend to visit family. I grew up in the north woods of WI so it was nice to go home and take a walk in the winter woods. While walking I decided to start a small fire and warm up before continuing the walk. The area has a lot of pine, birch, and oak trees. The temperature was a balmy 26 degrees.
I cleared out a small area to build my fire with my hands and feet. The snow was a little over a foot deep. I layed down a few pieces of birch bark as a bed for my fire. The bark came off of a rotten birch stump. I layed a few small pine twigs and started the fire with a cotton ball and my magnesium fire starter. The knife that I carried was my trusty Buck Nighthawk. It's not the best knife for use in the woods, I have a few others that are better, but my Nighthawk has a lot of sentimental value and I like carrying it when I'm up north.
