As scary as it seems, this could be good idea IMO... some protection is better than nothing...

I'm not sure how heavy the backpack would be... if a kid could be convinced to keep quiet about carrying one... and all the other issues with a child carrying an expensive item around school.

It is a shame that this even had to be created though :(

Yes, it's a shame it had to be conceived. The school where my daughter is supposed to go has at least 1 bomb threat a week. The kids there are being traumatized whether anyone wants to admit it or not. And they are also being somewhat desensitized to all the violence. Very sad indeed.

It's a great idea; sad the world needs it.

LEOs have bullet-proof clipboards, too, I think.

Mike :(

When I was in high school it was a common sight in the parking lot to see a number of old pickup trucks with shotguns and rifles on the gun racks. No one thought anything about it. That was in the 1980s; not really that long ago.

here we have a number of the local teen-agers hanging around outside their school:

it's all osama's fault.

Huh, I wonder if he ever tried shooting through a couple school books in a backpack. Books are very good at stopping bullets all by themselves.(unless you soak them in water)

Hey munk, you still shooting those rifles? Why don't you give it a shot with some old books and we'll post the pictures. Try the .41 mag too.

Not a bad idea to placate scared parents. And in some schools, it might be a good idea.

Chris

I'll see what I can do about the books, Ted. I just threw one away yesterday.

Good idea.

Even if a bullet went through a book, it's already expanded and is now more fragile.

I think placating parents is what this is about. Trouble is, there's a measure of self fullfilling prophecy involved; put metal detectors in schools reinforces the anti gun platfore. "If things are so bad our schools now need metal detectors to keep guns out, then maybe we should be looking at more gun control measures." Body armor for kids will send them over the top.

Me? I think it's a loony idea, which might just turn a profit. After all, there's one born every minute. I disagree, Munk. This isn't about placating parents - it's about turning a buck.

School shootings make news, but they're nothing like common. On the other hand, back injuries from humping around overloaded bookbags are quite common, esp. for kids who've not yet finished growing. Add the weight of a 15# sheet of body armour, and the backpack is likely to cause more problems than it will ever get the chance to solve.

Maybe the inventors are moonlighting from their regular jobs as chiropractors.

Tom, if we cared about the health of our children we'd not be sending them to public school for 13 years before throwing them out into the world.

There's an idea; save lives. Drop out of school.

Brown shoes, don't make it
quit school, why fake it?

I can answer this one for ya from personal experience. After my first encounter with street gangs in Detroit, I can tell you that a .38 shot at a leather backpack filled with two text books from a distance of a about 20 feet will penetrate through with enough force to create a nasty flesh wound. The bullets that were recovered went only about a half inch into my back that's according to the doctor who removed them (felt like he was diggin to my toes). The force however felt like I was hit with a baseball bat. These were the old 158 gr. lead round nose rounds that were were popular with LEO who carried wheel guns. I would however like to see some more real world data. Also maybe a new book vs. an older well used book might also affect the results as well.

aside from the daily shootings here (of course, no criminals have guns since they banned honest people from having them) which must be a figment of our imagination - mass histeria, knife crime is, per the government, rampant and we need to put more restrictions on knives and swords.

today there was a bbc news item on kevlar lined school uniforms, somewhere in there the govt. says they are not needed as student knife crimes are infrequent.

guess it depends on the semantics and how you present the statistics. of course if we just bubble wrap everyone and sing kumbayah all will be well and we will have world peace. also we do not need pointy knives to cut veggies, we can break them with our hands and eat them raw. meat of course comes neatly pre-cut & wrapped in cellophane from a supermarket, not from real animals.

To further play devil's advocate, bulletproof vests and backpacks just teach baddies to aim for the head.
