A simple matter of preference on selecting between 2 knives.

This is not a This is better than this and than that thread, it simply was a matter of preference.

Some one at the GROCery store heard me telling some one my problem with Amazon order I had for some Becker Micarta handles, as I got the partial order and when I ordered the handles they were in stock so I had to call CS who were very helpful on getting to the bottom of it.

Well he asked what are you going to put them on, I said my spare BK 2 probably as I already got two BK9s with micarta handles. And he asked if he could see it if I had it near by. So after loading the car I took it out and showed him, the one with the micrata handled one I keep in the car. He asked me directly the difference between the ESSE 5 and BK 2 as he said he was deciding. Well with my wealth of pseudo intellectual kanoweldge of the great steels and every thing... *leans back because nose grew to long* I told him what one was the most uber duber suoer tickcal tactical cooliest and...ok I told him what I knew of the main differences.

Price, and the Hilt.

Pointed out the price for the ESSE 5 you get better "Finish" micarta handles and a kydex sheath mostly for the higher price. The Heat Treat is suppose to be better and such. The hilt is a pointy glass breaker.

BK 2 you can modd it out with the handles like I had and get a kydex sheath later, it would add up to the cost about of an ESSE 5. But the handle seems better on the BK 2 and the HILT is not a pointy glass breaker but as he could see a good solid smasher and basher type. He rolled his eyes when I said that part. :D I told him I up graded the scales when I could. He fingered my BK 5 to get the feeling of the Zytel handles.

Hope I got that right. I wasn't too much off.

I offered to show him a few"Larger" middling sized ones I had but he wanted about 5" and HEAVY build. I told him why I got the BK 2s for heavy use 5" short blade about the same reasoning as his but he blinked at my last statement.

I told him to check out the U-tube Vids there is one good comparison between the two that made my decision, he said he did look at some but after finally able to get a hold literally of a BK 2 to hold and with that he said he made his mind up. He didn't need the pointy end hilt essentially. It was all a matter of his Preference.

His final decisions was the hilt. I told him the BK 22 had the nylon sheath he nodded and walked away. And said thanks about letting him know it was easy to upgrade the scales.

Me I LOVE that BK 2 hilt!

Good job on SHOWING him what you were talking about.

There's a reason I carry extra knives, hawks and axes in my vehicle, over and above what constitutes my BOB/GBH kits.

When talking to someone about outdoor use knives, throwing knives, throwing hawks/axes, it always helps to be able to say "Here, let's take a look at one." and open my trunk.

I always have a box with extra BKs (2,4,5,9), Kabars, Norse Hawks, Frontier Hawks, throwing bowies, no-spin knives and double-bit or two.

He was deciding on what he needed it for, woodsy wilderhood stuff, that hilt was the main selling point to him. I guess its a major decision maker for a lot of people.

Its winter so I have to carry extra survival stuff in the car.

For getting people out of cars that go in a ditch, cutting trees that fall across the road and other things. A Mattock works great on those hard packed snow or ice berms the snow plow leaves blocking in the drive way or a side road. The small and large bow saws got a few extra blades. yes an axe and hatchet to.

Its one packed little Civic Trunk.

I have the BK 2 in there for because its a short tough sharpened pry bar if needed. I thought we were going to need my BK 5 for Large Carcass cutting but the step mom decided the male calf was a pet now. I threw a spare BK 9 in there to compliment the SP-53 for people who come up behind us and help when we are clearing tree cluttered roads. Clearing the branches off for sawing is very handy. God Bless people who carry chain saws when they show up.

Good analysis on the BK2 and ESSE 5.

I'm a Becker guy and the BK-2 is THE Shitnitz!

Sounds like you're prepped!

Well if you drive a very low clearance Civic where it can get Stuckticus easily, and you go every where with it, its best to keep the dig out and road clearing tools ready.

use the Beckers to carve up your car, and portage it ;D

He screwed up.
He should have got a BK 9
.

no.

the official #1 mod response is "the BK9 thing is cute" but keep trying

imho, hey, original my opinion: i don't care what comes after...

the one true Machax, is the one and only, period, end of story

AND:

if you don't have one, you don't have an opinion

that's about that 42 42 42 ;)

course, that's my opinion :D

it's also fact...

then again... until you can get a Machax, a BK9 WILL keep you alive long enough to find a Machax

you might not forget your first BK9... maybe your second, or third... the world is hard...

you will not forget your Machax. it won't let you...

go Team Becker

BK9: what you need

Machax: what you really want, need, owns you...

Machax: it will keep you alive. disclaimer : she's now letting me say, since 1980s decade: hah hah hah. your soul is mine sucker.

Well he wanted a heavy use 5 incher is why he didn't want to see the 9. The 5 he saw was only to show him the Zytel handles he said he didn't like. He said the hilt (Would say pommel but to be PC that might be seen as a violence sounding word so a good old Smashing and Bashing and Thumping and Whumping HILT may sound less violent and offensive.) :p was what he also needed is such a knife.

I’ll never own a machax unless someone decides to start producing them again. The only “review” I needed was watching a vid where Ethan Becker shoots one with a .38(?) twice and it survived. First thing I did was cut off the nylon belt loop and rig the plastic loop backer for horizontal belt carry. It’s a sharp pry-bar, and for the price I wouldn’t consider an esee. Not when Ontario (Kabar’s friendly upstate neighbor) has flat ground sharpened pry bars like the rd6 and the rd4 made of spring steel. The bk2 came infinitely sharper, though! After the bk9, my favorite design is the Bk5(Not counting the limited bk20). Such a long knife with a trailing point makes it look like a truly fearsome weapon!(In a knife only contest, of course)
My all-season trunk shovel is the Cold Steel special forces shovel. It’s a little short, but it will go through right through ice, wood, and I imagine right through a predator’s throat, carotid’s and deep into the neck.
