I mentioned these in a post before but figured I'd post this one I made today showing a little more detail.

First hollow out a section on the underside of a bracket fungus, this is the hardest part !

Next fill the hollow you made with resin or Balsam sap and some old mans beard that will act as a wick and also take the spark from your ferro-rod~

Make a hole in either side and thread some Cedar root through for a handle/hanger ~

It's now good to go, just light her up with your ferro-rod !

You can now either hang it from a branch to illuminate your camp or carry it with you to light the way if wandering a trail in the dark !

The resins burns bright and for quite some time, you can always add more resin as it burns down !

Very nice, pitdog. Primitive lighting is something that sees little exposure in this forum.

Actually, I was out playing in the woods today myself. No pictures but lots of videos. Just have to wait until Phil uploads them to youtube. It will probably be posted in the Becker subforum though. I think you might be interested. One of the projects was to compare the new KaBar/Becker BK-4 (Machax) to the Cincinatti Becker Machax.

Nice, I will have to impress my niece this summer with that, trying to show her the ropes in the woods........my brother the banker gets out once a year.

I will have to try it, and it might make for a good bug repellant as well as a light.

Pretty cool man. Sometimes I do similar things with small bundles of fatwood on stone. Mainly to drive the mosquitoes off but sometimes for light.
