A simple question

Greetings to the forum,

I've got a pretty simple question. I'm on the market for a KFF from Pat and Wes Crawford, and have seen a couple gorgeous examples of blade and handle combinations that really caught my eye, one of which has a Ti handle with Devin Thomas spirograph damascus blade.

I'm new to knife collecting (the most "custom" blades I own so far are a spyderco/lum Ti handled tanto and a greco scalpel), and just want to know:

would I be totally, certifiably, monkeys-flying-outta-my-butt insane if I were to carry and use a damascus blade in my EDC rotation?

I've searched the threads, and have found that opinions vary, but it seems that generally speaking, damascus is for display and not for use (for fear of harming the blade).

Will I ruin the blade if I use it? Will flitz and a toothbrush ruin it? Will it need any more care than ATS-34?

Thanks for your responses, gentlemen (and any ladies that might be out there).

Respects,

Steve

Nothing wrong with carrying a damascus blade if you'd enjoy doing so. I have some I carry that are good performers. (I can't speak for the Spirograph, as the one blade I have with that pattern hasn't been used at all.)

I don't know that I'd want to use Flitz as it might remove (and scratch) the etching on the blade.

If you're going to use it, don't worry so much about the marks. You can always send it to the maker later on for reconditioning at a nominal charge.

Keep the blade protected with any of several products (Tuf-Cloth, Tuf-Glide, RemOil, BreakFree, etc) and you'll be fine. It's stainless damascus so it's not too prone to pit and rust.

I DO rotate a few of my "working" damascus blade in my EDC carry. Although damascus is really pretty it has exceptional edge retention and really carries a nice edge. Do I walk around with my Osborne knives in my pocket...NO! Actually, I'm having Ken Steigerwalt finish up a knife for me that I intend to carry and use for light work (packages, envelopes, etc.). Damascus is great for using around sheeple, because most have never seen it and it gives you a way to introduce your hobby, without looking like a lunatic!:D

Steve that stainless damascus is made to carry, especially in the KFF! I had one a couple years back and carried it religiously as one of my edc's. You can use a light polish on it every once in a while and it will not hurt it. I used "Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish" and had great results. CARRY IT!!! You know you want to!:D

Another thing to consider is that the Ti handle will scratch if you carry...

Yeah... it looks good... and yup, I think I've got the flying monkey butt problem - I'm carrying two damascus blades, only one of which is SS damascus, and I use 'em both. And, I've two others that rotate in and out of EDC. And when you pull 'em out in front of sheeple, they love 'em, too!
