I use the butt of a cola bottle and I try to cut it .

Many famous knives stop before the center where it's more thick.
the U2 did not stop and cut gently without efforts !!!
Of all the knives I have ever tested (no kidding)
this is the first time I ever got that result.

Other knives with strong results also (but not as good as the U2)
are:

-Little Sebenza
-Military plain
-Bm710 HS plain

Go figure !!!
AMAZING !!!

cheers

JM

I tried that test with a BM 806 and a Greco Whisper. No problems opening it right up. Of course, it depends on the amount of force you use and the type of soda bottle - Coke bottles seem to be a bit flimsier.

Oh hell...Before I saw the picture, I thought you ment a GLASS Coke bottle.:D.:D.

Great picture, JM!

In the name of all that's sacred: please make sure your vodka bottle is empty first. ;)

Try cutting the top of the bottle in half, that part that the cap screws onto. That is very difficult for even the best cutting knives I have seen.

I'll do as soon as I will a U2 back.

I've send it to Peter Horstberger at Fallkniven for close inspection.

cheers

Very interesting test, Nemo! Is the knife noticably duller after one cut through the bottom or the top of the bottle? If not, does it get duller after two or three?

Bonjour,

thank you for the nice words.

the edge was as keen as before.
I don't think that kind of plastic is very abbrasive to the edge.

it's not easy to cut as when the blade get stuck, it won't go further.
(The plastic will bend giving more matter to cut)

It's a great test to check the grind and the edge of a knife IMHO.

The U2 edge was polished on leather but the Ronin edge was the factory one (it's a brend new Ronin I will picture for the review on La Passion des COuteaux)

Cheers

I remember back when talonite first came out, and we were trying to figure out its operating properties, Steve Harvey did a test like that in a plastic soda bottle. He turned the blade a bit at some point, and the talonite edge sheared right off! Good verification of our strength worries.

Hard plastic is definitely a rough test that in my experience greatly favors very thin blades and edges. The Calypso Jr., sharpened competently, sails right through.

I believe we are bunch of old timers around here !

All "Oct 1998" please stand up !!! :D

The grind, the thickness of the blade are also very important !

The Calypso is a flatground blade with a thin profile.
So is the Ronin, the U2, the Millie, the Sebenza, The Perrin Bowie, the Bm710...
It won't be easy for a Buck Strider to perform that test, son't you think so ?

Cheers

Nah, it is really easy on the knife. But it may be difficult for you - if it is, eat a few more quarter pounders to get some more body weight. I recently did the top bottle cutting with a few knives, some of them took over 150 lbs to make a cut. Didn't bother the knife, left a fine dent in my hand though.

Thick plastic is not fun to cut. If you want to make life a lot easier just buy a cheap knife and heat it up and cut the plastic. That is really easy - though the smell is kind of problematic. Just blame that on the person standing close to you. Unless it is Fred Perrin and he has any of his knives.

Looks like a good test. But, I have yet to see a knife made from any steel, by any maker(custom or factory), that will cut much cardboard without going dull pretty quickly. I don't know what's in cardboard, but it sure dulls a blade quickly.

FYI There is SAND in cardboard.
ALso in paper...

That's why it dulls every blade so quick...

Cheers

Jeeezzz..when I first looked at that picture, I thought it was a breast implant!! Shows ya where my head is at.

There is also clay in most cardboard and cutting it is like stabbing it in the soil, in respects to edge destruction.
