At least three of us got this email a couple of days ago:

Sir
I have found this Geo. Schrade Presto Automatic with all the standard markings. It is unusual from what I can find because of the riveted (hinged) bladeguard.

It is fully functional and photos are attached

What can you tell me about it ?

Thanks

We all, it seems, forwarded the question to the one person here qualified to answer it, and that person went to all the trouble to do so in his typical excellent fashion. Not even a thank you and the knife is on ebay now.

Few people here have benefited more than I from all the great information so freely shared with such class, good humor, respect, ect. I am far from any kind of a Schrade expert. I know about margueritas and a few other things. Like Texas Toothpicks. Kinda burns me up, the way the writer used the 'scattergun' approach to send each of us (that has our email address listed in our profile here) the same question. Just so he could write a decent ebay item description. I found the knife on the 'bay, and God help me, I intended to report the damn thing to Ebay as he is selling a switchblade, but he cleverly wrote his description to avoid that problem.

Last time I'll go to any trouble like that again. People can join BFC, visit our forum, introduce themselves, and ask their questions, and I'll do whatever I can to answer them, but I resent the way we were treated in this instance. Maybe it is a bad day and it is not taking much to set me off, but I feel used.

Phil

Edited today to delete name and address. And to add... Newbie questions always welcome. Please post here in the forum for the best chance at a really accurate answer.

I also received this email. Ain't that a laugh...:D

As others probably did, I referred this person to Rich. But I did ask that he go to the forum first and post his question before contacting Rich directly, and that I would post pics for him if necessary. It was not my intention to have LT attacked by email for free appraisals. In fact, I thought that others here would enjoy the pics and a discussion would ensue.

I don't like being taken advantage of either. Next time, we should severely undervalue the knife...;)

Frustrated here also, Phil

Glenn

I have always thought that the majority of 1st time posters who's first questions are "what is it and how much is it worth" were probably looking to do nothing but sell the item on ebay or wherever.

I like the idea of undervaluing:D
Maybe it will keep a few of the profit mongers away.:)

- for the many, many times I've "researched" for the "value" or "worth" of a particular knife - utilizing the wealth of knowledge found on this site - recognizing just WHERE that wealth emanates, for the too few times I have and the many times I haven't - said -

Thanks ...

Y'all's willingness to share is much appreciated....

I don't sell... I buy.. And even given the learned insight found in this forum, there are many times I probably have "paid" too much..

"Worth" and "Value" are such "relative" terms.......

Kinda like memories....

p.s. Can ya tell I don't want ya PO'd at me?? Huh?? Huh??
Seriously, the guy at least should have said "thank you"....

I agree, the guy should have had the courtesy to at least say "Thank you." Especially since he used the knowledge for his own profit.
Bernard Levin charges for for his appraisals, maybe LT should send this guy a bill. :D

I really appreciate all the knowledge that resides in this forum, some people have more than other of us. It is great that the knowledge is so freely shared. People have shared info with me (Ron is coaching me now on how to bid more effectively on ebay, for example), several of you have helped me with questions I have had about my collection or about knives I wanted to buy. Thank you all. I appreciate it very much.
It is aggravating when someone abuses the generosity of the forum members to make money, especially without a "thank you." :grumpy:

PLEASE my opinion is that the fellow simply asked a question while a bit chaft at his simply not saying thanks for any info it is really no biggie. Frankly I love looking at pictures and a chance to explain an artifact, I truly appreciate all of your backing . I above all understand not having the time or in some cases forgetting to respond. Please let me apologize for intimating that this fellow was in any way remiss.

I do not know what happened to his listing except that it was either a buy it now for 399.00 pr was taken off because of the usual . Highender report it syndrome ( previously discussed ). In any event . Please be known that I love old steel especially spring steel. Thanks guys for your backing. LT

OK, LT. I've deleted the guy's name and address.

It was not me that reported the auction. The way it was written, I don't think ebay would have any basis for doing so, and I do know it would have pissed off a couple of you guys who like these great old autos. It was a great looking old knife.

I also added a line about how much we all welcome questions here.

Phil

Sir

I sincerely apologize to you and the others if my technique of seeking information offended.

I thought my inquiry was straight forward and I did indeed receive multiple responses that I really do appreciate.

This item along with others were found at my dad's home when he recently died. The dollars will help clean up the residual bills.

Once again.... I apologize.

Robert,

We're just a bunch of knife freaks that enjoy talking about all things Schrade (and some other things). That's why I encouraged you to post your question as a thread, so we could enjoy that knife and its' story. Unfortunately, many people show up only to get a quick value on something, and then you never hear from them again.

As torch carriers for the Schrade brand (and it's relatives), we are interested in the stories and history that go along with a picture. Remembering like that is a way to honor the memories of those who owned those knives before us.

We are kind of a family (a dysfunctional one, but a family) here, and always welcome all new comers. You don't have to have a collection of schrades (or any other knife) to come here and have a good time.

I hope you see why we felt used, but I also hope you hang around and share some history with us as well.

Glenn

Welcome Sgt. Coons!

Glenn pretty much summed us all up...stick around, we'll make you a knifenut, if you aren't one now. :D

Welcome to the Schrade-o-holics, Schrade-o-philes, Schrade-o-we-really-love-our-knives family. And, by the way, it's YOUR turn to buy the next round of Margaritas.

It seems that knife collectors and slashing go together. Including the Email I received from Manyplews ( hidden address Google system ) with the subject title of "Asshole from New York".
As LT recognizes after his years of LE experience ....... it takes all kinds.

As Rush would say.....Ditto on the hearty welcome. Come back often!!

Paul

Ditto's on the condolenses, welcomes and come-back-anytime...

As for being an Officer of the Law, thanks for your service and for putting your ass on the line everyday doing things I/we take so much for granted...

And should I EVER find myself in your part of the country (no offense but not likely) .... I will be: Hands on the wheel and "Yes Sir, Whatever You Say Sir" !!!

Robert,Welcome to the Schrade Forum.
Sincerest condolences on your father's death.
Doug

Robert,
Also welcome to the forum and sorry for your loss.

If possible, could you tell us if ebay pulled your listing and what they may have said?

If you were kicked : were you also contacted after by another buyer?

Thanks
Larry

Like all of you,I was sorry to hear about the loss of his father. I also appreciate the work, sacrifices, etc that our police and fire departments provide.
However,I wondered why he thought it necessary to point out in his response to my e-mail and in his posting on this forum, that he is a police officer. What does that matter to a bunch of knife-nuts? It wouldn't to me unless I was in possession of and selling a prohibited weapon in his jurisdiction.

I am far from any place of authority in this forum, and I do value each and every one who participates in it. I would respectfully suggest that this thread has run it's full length of usefulness and we should all let it die right here and continue on another subject in our usual friendly and caring way.
