A Sleeker Knife?

First off, big thanks to all you guys who are a part of this BM subforum. I've started a few threads here and your time, knowledge, and help is extremely appreciated. I don't have a local BM dealer so hearing your thoughts and opinions really help me to not waste my money. :)

I like big knives a good bit. I'm a big guy with big hands and I've come to the realization that a handle needs to be 4 inches or more for me to feel comfortable. I of course can make do on less and carried a Kershaw Leek or Scallion for a few years that had a 3 inch handle. I strongly prefer a 4 inch though. The BM 940 series is great in that it's a long handle and it's sleek and slim. Perfect for office carry, or EDC. I'm wanting something a bit bigger though. I have the 950 Rift and I really dig it but it's handles are kind of bulky to me (not fat like a Griptilian but front to back bulky). I was hoping a Contego was thinner all around but I was wrong. The 710 looks like it may be the ticket but I don't know if I"d be a fan of the recurve style blade. I wish the 940 had a beefed up big brother sleeker than the Rift and Contego.

I welcome your thoughts on other knife recommendations as well as the 710.

Kind of funny.....I'm a big guy also, and have held on to the motto all my life of "Big guns, big trucks, and big dogs". Now that I am into knives a lot more than I used to be, I think I need "big knives" also.

I just received a 710 yesterday. Before that I bought a regular grip, mini-grip, and 705 sequel. The 2 smaller knives are OK for desk work etc, but have primarily used my regular grip (now with custom scales - oh what a difference!). I'll tell you the 710 is just perfect for me. I've also had my eye on a 940/943 for a long time, but don't know if I even want one now (I know I will eventually have to have one....). The recurve doesn't bother me at all. Although I haven't used the 710 for anything yet, I have in my mind that the recurve portion of the blade will work well for me when wanting to take a good bite on something that I am shaving anything round. I feel that a round piece of wood of any type will lay into the recurve nicely and may stay put that way better.

Just my 2 cents from a feeble old mind!

The 484 may interest you if you are looking for something in a smaller size: it's an ergonomic handle that accommodates hands of all sizes. However, its smaller blade may be less than what you want. The 710/705 are loved for their small form factor making carry much more comfortable. I really like the 705 and was sad when they stopped making it. It's replacement, the 707 Sequel, is not nearly as compact. I like the 710, but I've personally found the blade a little too large and prefer more countered grips. You may find that relatively simple handle on the 710 is exactly what you are looking for. I don't mind the recurve as it's not super pronounced, but I personally think it makes food prep slightly more difficult and requires some adapting.

You might also find you like something like a Ritter Grip/Mini Ritter with aftermarket grips/scales. There is such a wide variety of aftermarket scales that almost everyone can find a product that fits their personal preference. Many aftermarket options make it much thinner. I find the Mini Ritter with Wilkins scales makes it a great EDC size which fits almost anyone...not to mention a blade that is winning!

It's a shame they stopped making the Skirmish as the Mini Skirmish (and even the regular) fits your criteria the most with its super thin, great handle.

710 would do it. The knife is basically just a larger 943 with some recurve. I hate recurve blades, but the radius in the 710 is pretty big. My 1/2" lansky stones have no problem sharpening the recurve just the same as the belly. Truth be told, push cutting became a treat with that blade shape.

If you really hate recurve blades seriously consider the 710S. Honestly once you get to 3.5"+ blades you still have 3"+ of usable cutting edge. Plenty enough blade to get any job done.

For example with the 790 series has a similar recurve blade to the 710 but I honestly prefer the 790SBK over any other 790 variation I've handled. Same knife but easier to sharpen and serrations you can use when needed.

581 Barrage. Contoured handle, m390 steel, AO that can be de-assisted. and its isn't small, but its not wide in the hand either. I chose mine over the Rift.

The Barrage is too thick for me, really. Looks like the 710 is leading right now.
