Here is a small fighter/everyday utility knife Dan asked me to make for his son that is stationed in Iraq. I was honored to make this knife for Paul. Dan asked that it have a blade of about 5", a green micarta handle and it be nonreflective and then turned me loose on the project. I forged the 5" blade from W2 and then french greyed it so that it would be non reflective. The fittings are 416 stainless and the handle is of course green micarta. I bead blasted the handle and fittings for a better gip and to make them non reflective. The overall length of the knife is 9 7/8" In the pics I haven't put the final edge on the knife becuase my son wanted to hold the knife while I took a picture of it.

The knife is real nice Craig, but you know the kid steals the show. ;)

This looks like a real nice clean and extremely useful design. I like it a lot and think the basic design would also work very well in a presentation-grade version. Keep up the great work buddy!

Cool knife Craig! I love that shot of your son; he looks pretty happy with that knife :).

Very nice. Danbo, your son is going to like that one.

I have no doubt he will like it. Now, let's just hope he only needs to use it for utilitarian purposes.

Very nice fighter! How do you "french grey" a blade? I hope it isn't by stabbing a french and letting the blood stain the steel ;)

Looks like a useful knife.
Danbo-
I didn't even realize your son was away on duty. Prayers sent for a safe return.

That is a great knife Craig, it will no doubt serve well. Danbo, all the best to your son. I hope that he stays safe.

My son had a blast holding the knife for the picture. He also thinks it is pretty cool that his picture is on the internet.

I used to make a few bits and spurs and the term French grey came from that. Bascally I finish the knife as I normally would and then very lightly, I stress very lightly, bead blast the surface. All I am trying to do witht he bead blast is to sublty blend the surface of the blade. Then a quick trip to the acid etch. This leaves a nice grey color color on the metal parts.

The knife along with a care package of some magazines, a Benchmade 707 Sequel and a C2 Centurion Surefire light is is heading towards Paul this morning. I figure if he already has a pocket knife and a surefire he probably knows someone in his unit that could use them.

Folks, this is a good example of why I consider Craig a good friend and one of the best knifemakers to deal with. Those items he included(Benchmade 707, Surefire C2), were the payment we agreed upon for him to make this knife for Paul. For him to now send those items to Paul, means he made this knife for free(actually, he's out of pocket, since he paid the shipping too). :)

Nice work Craig. Your son looks like he can start sanding blades pretty soon.

My best wishes for your son's welfare... And with the support like this, I'm sure he'll also survive in style!

Craig,
That is one tremendous little package!!! And it looks like a blade style that you could offer in several lengths without much modification, just adjust the handle/blade length ratios... :D
Hmmmm.... another one I have to add to my list of "I'ont's!"... Man, I want that one!

Keep up the good work, Craig!

Yeah my son really wants to help sand tehm now but I keep gettting all queesy inside when I see him walking towards a finish sanded blade with 60 grit paper. :p

I actually do make this style in several sizes. Below is older example of my terrible photography. But it does at least show the different sizes. The choils are a bit different on these as the customer requested them to be rounded so he could put his finger in front of the guards if need be. I believe that the large ones had 10" blades, the medium was I believe a 8" blade and the small one was anohter 5" blade.

Paul's going to enjoy that piece all the more, knowing Danbo had it made
FOR HIM.

Looks like Craig nailed it. too.

Nice job Craig! You are one of the best in my book. What kind of sheath did you make for this? Any special considerations for a sandy environment?

Danbo: I hope and pray that your son stays safe and sound!! That was an awesome thing for you to for him!! God bless you both!! I thank your son for his service!! OMG!!I LOVE that knife!! I love the green handles AND the grey knife blade!! That IS my favorite fixed blade!! I am going to PM you!! WOW!! I soooooo want one of those!!
