A small gem, easy to live-with EDC gentleman's folder...

The regulars here no doubt already know all about this knife. But for those who might not be familiar with it, I just wanted to share some info on this knife: the Benchmade 960 Osborne.

I've found that when I wanted to carry a knife in my dockers, slacks, or a suit that many fine, capable folder knives with 3" blades just felt a little bit too heavy and bulky. And from an EDC knife, I don't have much need for a knife which is suitable for "heavy" use. (Honestly, about all I use knives for anyway is opening boxes, packaging, cutting tape, plastic, starting open an orange, etc.) So a medium to light duty knife will do about all I need done in the way of cutting anyway. Certainly a $25 economy knife would meet my needs, but I still wanted a fine knife with certain qualities, like axis locking mechanism, high grade steel which can hold an edge well, but still small, very thin, very light weight.

I knew I really liked Benchmade operating quality and the axis lock, so I set out to find a Benchmade axis knife which is very thin, very lightweight, relatively small but with a full 3" blade, and good steel. Here's what I wound up with: just 4.2" long closed, only .37" thick, just 2.3 oz.

The knife is no longer a current model, but I found a good BM dealer (Wesson Hardware in Wesson, MS) on eBay where I picked this up for $129 including shipping. Took two days to get to me in Washington State.

It arrived today and I'm very happy with it. Blade was perfectly centered and fairly sharp, but a little work with my IdaHone ceramics really crisped it up beautifully. Fit, finish, operation is really fine as you would expect from BM.

It meets my light duty EDC needs perfectly. Tip-up carry - nice! Super slim and feather weight at only 2.3 oz., this little knife (but with 3.1" blade) carries in slacks effortlessly... I don't even know I'm carrying it. D2 steel should hold an edge quite well. With the smooth aluminum & G10 scales, I don't think it's going to tear up pockets much either. The handle is aluminum with slim, partial-length stainless steel liners. No doubt that's why this little gem only weighs 2.3 oz. Purple anodized titanium back spacer is kind of a whimsical, cool touch too. ;)

Anyway... just wanted to share this with those who might be looking for such a knife, but are not aware of the 960. Though the knife is discontinued, there are still some new ones in the pipeline. Mostly red, but I did find a stash of the silver models, which was the color I wanted.

Thanks for looking.

It's a shame they moved this one to their harley davidson line. I would really like one of these and the harley davidson version doesn't do it for me.

There are still factory-fresh, brand-new, Benchmade-branded versions of this knife (in both red and silver) available from several sources. And can be had for around $130. Like you, I prefer a Benchmade-branded Benchmade, not one named after a gun or a motorcycle. (Though I do love my guns and I do ride a Harley!) ;)

Anyway, if you want a Benchmade-branded copy, you can still get 'em!

I have this knife with the blue inlay. Awesome knife.

Kaizen... I love that clip of the seagull scurry quickly to make off with the bag without getting caught! Priceless.

That seagull is a ninja bird alright.
Can I ask ZDHart, have you had to sharpen or touch up the edge yet? Or haven't you had the knife for that long

Those are some outstanding pic's. I have the exact same folder. Great knife, very lightweight, excellent blade to handle ratio, and its got the axis lock. The one thing I do'nt like is the handle can be very slippery. You have to be carefull.

Just got the knife yesterday. It was somewhat sharp when it arrived, but not as much as I would like. So I gave it a couple dozen passes on the IdaHone ceramic sticks and that crisped it up right nicely. Now it's much more razory.

Thanks.... glad ya like the pics! And thanks for the advisory on slippery. I will watch that. The handle is pretty smooth... and not huge either. Perhaps the G10 would be a little better if it had more of a texture on it. All reasons why it wouldn't be a top choice for heavy use. But conversely, they are also top reasons why I wanted this knife as a gentleman's EDC! The way I will use it, I like the small, smooth form factor.

I thought you were going to go for the 707, but some friendly fellow flashoholic swung you over to the 960 at the last moment.
:p

cave dave.... oh, think not that I've forgotten the excellent recommendation for the 707 Sequel. I had a chance to handle one in a store on Saturday and it is everything people say it is. I will definitely be getting a 707... they are Sweeeet!

Might want to mention that you choose this knife after some great input from your fellow knife knuts on this thread:

As for the 960SLV, absolutely!!!, it too was recommended to me by numerous folks on this forum! And I bought this before the Sequel because the 960 is becoming less easy to find (especially silver). Lest you think I have not benefited from recommendations made in this forum, you guys are draining my wallet! In fact, all but the 943 and Leek in my household (not counting my old CRKTs) shown in this pic were brought to my attention in the last week or two through the kind people of this forum.

The G10 Pika was an impulse purchase of my own doing and although it really is a very nicely made knife, it's design is not quite ergonomic for me to deploy rapidly. SO tomorrow it will begin the voyage back to the supplier and will be replaced by a 551 Grip. (Hard not to be swayed by the forum when it comes to Grips!) ;)
