A Small Gripe

I took receipt of a brand new Victorinox folding pocket knife today.

It, of course, is very well made, like Victorinox pocket knives so consistently seem to be.

However, like all of the other products I get from this company, it shipped with a DULL tip directly from the swiss factory!

Upon close inspection it appears they intentionally dull the Tips of their pocket knives.

Why??? This is annoying to fix every time I purchase from them.

Other than my little gripe I am well pleased with the product.

That's bizarre. My SAK's all have sharp tips. I doubt they intentionally dull the tips.

Very, very unlikely. And certainly not my experience.

Unless you got the My First Vic or a Junior? Then yes, no sharp tips ;)

Every One I Purchase Looks Like This:

The tips seem to be rounded and polished right out of the packaging. To my eye it looks like someone runs them over a buffer??

I have not experienced this from any victorinox knife I've bought or handled.

Are you saying a particular retailer orders them with blunted tips ?

I have ordered Swiss Army Knives from different retailers for decades, and Without Fail the all have the very tips rounded over like my photographs displayed.

It is an easy enough fix but it's bizarre a knife company would even do this!!

Hmm, never seen that before... strange. Looks like there is a chip in it too.

Those appear to be used / sharpened?

I am seeing these pattern right out of the packages,on new Swiss Army Knives. The one I posted previous to this message, earlier in the topic, was 100% brand new, with Victorinox Factory Oil still present on the blade.

I have two more on Order. I will post the tips of their blades to this topic upon receipt!

They are all used, but not abusively and only stropped then touched up on a ceramic rod when needed.
Nothing about the edge has been changed.

A lot of Swiss army knives I've bought this includes those from them directly have shown up with blunted tips, not everyone of them, but a lot, I can only wonder if there's "politics" behind it.
A not so recent purchase from victorinox direct where I bought 7 various small knives, 2/3rd of them had blunted tips. If this is not intentional then I wonder what's wrong with their grinding machine.
Otherwise they're a great company i spent too much money on

Swiss Army Knives are marvels of manufacturing shortcuts. Take a few apart sometime and you'll see what I mean. Those rounded tips are probably the result of buffing the blades.

They aren't made for knife knuts. They're made for people who know nothing about knives. Get used to it.

I Have Long suspected they do this blunting on purpose As some Misguided ""safety feature.""

The Company is pushing designs with No Knife Blade very hard lately, trying to Convince people a Sharpened Screwdriver is an Ideal package opening tool!!! It is crazy!!

By Next Wednesday I should possess two more Victorinox knifes. Photographs will be Recorded on their tips and I will share them with this post topic.

Id have to agree with the safety feature sillyness. Ive never stabbed myself with a
sak, ive cut myself plenty of times instead.
The knifeless models are in their words "travel conveniences". More truthfully it allows victorinox to sell their products in countries with the most draconian practices

Are their countries where adults can not Carry a small slipjoint???

I imagine it's more likely a case of less experienced employees letting the tip spend a bit more time on the buffer than is necessary.

Here is the answer from Reddit.

"I bought a compact earlier in the year that was like this, [reference to a photo] I returned it, and the replacement arrived the same.

I did a bit of digging...

Apparently, it's down to more modern machinery that's being used in production now. If the 'new' 91mm blade sharpening jig is set up for a super pointy tip, there's a far higher chance of overheating and burning the blade at the tip, where the metal is finer, and the blade gets rejected. These new, rounded ones we're seeing now don't have that problem, and there's a much lower rejection rate on the blades, saving time and money."
