Disclaimer: I'm not a bladesmith. Big fan of knifemakers, but it's not my trade. But I've had a question tugging on the back of my brain for some time, and this is the best place I can think of to ask.

Think of a liner lock or framelock folding knife. The lock bar pushes sideways against the blade to create the detent, and comes across in the blade path to lock the blade open. Generally, there is some kind of notch or groove cut out where that spring starts.

What is it that keeps the metal in that shape? Is it bent inward when the liner/frame is formed? Why doesn't it just bend out?

Always wondered,
Mike

most used are either stainless steel which has been heattreated to act as a spring or made from a grade of Ti that has a natural spring tendency.
