This is a plea more than a post but I just can't stop thinking about it. When I first saw the Szabo folder, I absolutely fell it love with the knife. I love the ethnic designs and the fresh take on timeless functional blades. I suppose the Spyderco Navaja was what really sparked this intense passion for me. I don't recall if I preordered the Szabo or not, but I know I had it within the week it was released. The knife was more impressive in the hand than I had imagined, but there were a few let downs for me personally. The blade shape is absoutely stunning; and even more than that it's extremely functional. Which is why the knife was an EDC for me despite the massive size and weight. The handles, while they looked good in photos, weren't quite the delight I had hoped they would be. I think a standard peel-ply carbon fiber would suffice.
The handles also had a lot of hot spots, and the Spyderco trademark hole was very sharp around the edges. My thumb nail had quite a few scratch marks from opening and closing the blade. Yet despite this I still enjoyed having this thing in my pocket. The reason I ended up selling the knife and the "nail in the coffin" for me was the difficulty with opening the knife. Especially when you compare it to the Paramilitary 2, which also employs the compression lock.
Now to the plea part. Please, please for the love of God make a smaller Szabo. If the blade length could be taken down to a 3.75 blade, then the secondary closing spring would not be needed to keep that chunk of steel in the handle, and could employ a nice strong detent instead. Allowing the compression lock to function with that same smooth and silky manner that we have come to know and love on other Spyderco knives. If possible, please also round of the edges of the handles and Spyderco hole as well, but really if you just make it smaller and get rid of the closing spring I won't be picky about sharp edges. I realize that Mr. Szabo is a knife fighter, and this knife was developed in part to be used for that application, but I hope he will forgive us (or maybe just me) for wanting that design in my pocket for daily use. I also realize that Taichung is probably at capacity this year with all of the demand on current designs, so it will probably need to be slated for a year or two down the road. But I'm begging.
Thank you,
