A Smaller Szabo Folder, Please?

This is a plea more than a post but I just can't stop thinking about it. When I first saw the Szabo folder, I absolutely fell it love with the knife. I love the ethnic designs and the fresh take on timeless functional blades. I suppose the Spyderco Navaja was what really sparked this intense passion for me. I don't recall if I preordered the Szabo or not, but I know I had it within the week it was released. The knife was more impressive in the hand than I had imagined, but there were a few let downs for me personally. The blade shape is absoutely stunning; and even more than that it's extremely functional. Which is why the knife was an EDC for me despite the massive size and weight. The handles, while they looked good in photos, weren't quite the delight I had hoped they would be. I think a standard peel-ply carbon fiber would suffice.

The handles also had a lot of hot spots, and the Spyderco trademark hole was very sharp around the edges. My thumb nail had quite a few scratch marks from opening and closing the blade. Yet despite this I still enjoyed having this thing in my pocket. The reason I ended up selling the knife and the "nail in the coffin" for me was the difficulty with opening the knife. Especially when you compare it to the Paramilitary 2, which also employs the compression lock.

Now to the plea part. Please, please for the love of God make a smaller Szabo. If the blade length could be taken down to a 3.75 blade, then the secondary closing spring would not be needed to keep that chunk of steel in the handle, and could employ a nice strong detent instead. Allowing the compression lock to function with that same smooth and silky manner that we have come to know and love on other Spyderco knives. If possible, please also round of the edges of the handles and Spyderco hole as well, but really if you just make it smaller and get rid of the closing spring I won't be picky about sharp edges. I realize that Mr. Szabo is a knife fighter, and this knife was developed in part to be used for that application, but I hope he will forgive us (or maybe just me) for wanting that design in my pocket for daily use. I also realize that Taichung is probably at capacity this year with all of the demand on current designs, so it will probably need to be slated for a year or two down the road. But I'm begging.

Thank you,
One of your many addicts.

I concur with your "nail in the coffin" criticism. It's way too stiff to open (and close). Especially for a knife billed as a fighting knife. Quick deployment? Nope. I can't think of a Spyderco that's stiffer. My Tuff is much easier to open and close.

OP, you summed this up perfectly. I wholeheartedly support your plea. I've handled the szabo many times at my local b+m but I just couldn't pull the trigger. Every change you recommend I endorse. Anyone else?

Agreed. I have both the satin and black. They have not gotten any use at all.

Needs to be smoother, "softer", dehorned, smaller, easier opening, etc. just as the OP has so eloquently stated.

I can't imagine that many of the discontinued but readily available satin nor newer black blade are being sold as is since I think they have a very limited audience.

I loved how it looked right away, but when I handled it there was a bit of a let down. I absolutely agree with austonh

Hi Austonh,

Thanx much for the input. We'll consider the concept. We do have a couple of Laci's designs in-the-works, but none like the original.

Thank you kindly Sal, your response will be my glimmer of hope for now. If you ever do spec out a prototype of a smaller Szabo, feel free to send it my way regardless of cost.

I think the size is perfect. I love big knives...But that detent is awful for a fighting knife. No thank you!

I bought the current one as soon as it came out, the knife just spoke to me. Opened the packaging and the monster came out. Realized after working that compression lock 4-5 times that it wasn't for me. Just too stiff, will stick with the Superleaf and PM2. Still have it, too good looking to let go.

I hope a Folding Express is in there, I'd even bet money it is. I could be wrong, but it seems like a shoe-in.

You guys kill me! For once Spyderco makes a large kickass folder and you guys are whining about it! There are dozens of weeny little Spyderco folders already in existence for pity's sake!
With grannies like you guys on the forum maybe the upcoming Tatanka will be the second, and last, large folder Spyderco makes.
Thanks so much ladies.

If you had taken a moment to actually read the posts in this thread you would've found out that nobody talked about replacing the current Szabo but instead want another Szabo while smaller but more importantly easier to open, etc.

Not sure what I did to help, but yeah man don't mention it!

I would love to buy one, I like big knives but if it is so stiff as you say I may reconsider the purchase.

Yeah I fondled one at a LGS, detent was stiffer than a dead man.

I apologize if my little out-burst above offended anyone. It was ment to convey exasperation rather than anger. I'm just really pleased that Spyderco has finally ventured into the large folder arena.

I had read about the stiffness but I optimistically thought that maybe the black coated version would have been tweaked for easier operation since it came after the satin version. Nope. I have mine on display. It's a cool looking knife. I prefer carrying and using my knives though.

I think that all of the posters in this thread can agree that the Szabo is a beautiful knife with amazing lines and a very strong appeal in the overwhelming flood of boring "works for everyone" knives today. I foam at the mouth envisioning a smaller model that does not require the secondary closing system and is more practical for every day use. I hope that there is enough interest and support for Spyderco to develop and produce it.

With the smaller Domino (the Dice) and the smaller LionSpy on the horizon, perhaps we are that much closer.
