Just note for you scroungers that like the King Of Steel :D

If you surf the junk yards and local county/city auctions, look for secretary's chairs. You know those rolling things that all offices have.

They have two arms and a springy back, all of 5160 (that I've found so far)

They are powder coated but you have to anneal the things anyway and after that's done, the powder coating almost wipes off.

Good source for wide heavy and long pieces real steel!

OH....I never pay more than $2.00 for them and most of the time, they will give them away because the backs get loose.

It is a sickness Jeff but it's more. It's preserving history and it's good for the ecology.

Let's say I scrounge some steel from .....Patrick Henry's home place and make a knife/sword from it. That has historical significance.

Now on to the ecology....Let's say I get a chair from a Government surplus sale. Hillary Clinton might have had her fat butt on it. That's hazardous waste and it shouldn't be in a landfill. However, if I forge a sword from it, I can use that power of darkness to make a sword that will cut car doors off their hinges and behead bronze statutes and, and.....wait a minute  This isn't Sword Forums is it... :o Sorry

Yes Jeff, It's a sickness :D

Allright! I didn't know those were 5160!

On a related note I know where some huge pieces of steel 1/2" to 3/4" by 3" are that look like some kind of heavy spring chair brackets. Are there thngs like this mounted on heavy machinery like dozers and such. I should drag one home and take a picture of one. Better yet I'll just stop by that pile and snap a shot of one, maybe someone will recognize it.

You can't tell by looking Guy. You need to get some, cut off a piece, Anneal it, spark test it, harden it and temper. Then you need to brass rod it and see how the HT did. It takes a while to determine what kind of steel it is and how to heat treat it. The fact is, many companies use a propriety steel that has all the properties of one type or the other, but some additive.

It really doesn't matter. It can be Klingon worm steel for all I care. If you figure out the HT and it takes and holds an edge and the blade has all the properties you are looking for.......it's good steel! :D

I don't know where you all get the idea I have any money. Every time I get some, there's someone stand there with his hand out! :grumpy:

Remember me?

I got two truck coil springs in a grocery store parking lot awhile back. I didn't even have to pull them. They were sitting right next to the car. Funny how you end up with passengers when you least expect them.
