Headed out for a little walk with Marcelo and his boy. It is nice to see Spring making an appearance over here.

Anyway I took some pics of things that stood out.

Daffodils are one of the first plants to flower over here, and it's a sure sign of Spring.

The Crocus is never far behind though

Here's a little flower that is sometimes confused with Dandelion. Some call Coltsfoot "The son before the Father". This picture tells you why.

Wintergreen was offering some fruit.

This highly evasive weed is a nuisance to many over here, to me Garlic Mustard is a nice spring salad.

Red Clover also makes a nice little snack.

Along side a creek bed is a good place to spot some edibles.

However the Trout Lilly is not quite ready yet.

The Skunk Cabbage can be eaten if really needed after some boiling. Although Marcelo's boy seams to disagree

If you are deciding to harvest Skunk Cabbage, be aware of imposters lurking nearby.

False Hellebore grows right alongside Skunk Cabbage and is highly Toxic.

Turning over some rocks in the creek turned up this little guy.

The creek emptied into a pond and that's where this guy was found.

As well as this guy.

and another

We didn't start any fires today, but we are always aware of things that can help us.

Here's littlman demonstrating where to get the best natural tinder in New England.

Here's how he sees the Paper Birch tree

There's no shortage of Beech trees in CT, and those wonderful leaves stay on all year. They make a terrific tinder as well.

If you're looking for good wood to get a bowdrill fire, a stand of Poplar trees is a good place to look. There is always 1 standing dry dead tree in the bunch.

When you get that coal. False Tinderfungus aka Horsehoof fungus makes a good coal extender.

That's about all from our little walk today.

I hope you all enjoyed it half as much as we did.

Thanks for posting these great pics. We've been getting some green action up here too. I can't wait.

Wonderful pictures and very informative. Thanks for sharing!

Cool post Tony, great pics. Great time to be in the woods, all those plants blooming and critters stirring. Thanks for posting.

Thanks guys.

Good to see you found your way back GP!

On the way to work this morning I went and checked out my favorite Trout stream, as season starts this Saturday. I spotted a few trout feeding, so that's a good sign.

I also spotted some Wild Leeks.

Some Trillium getting ready to flower.

and IMO the prettiest Spring flower is almost ready.

Bloodroot

Looks like a great day to be out - I enjoyed the pics of the flora and fauna.

How's the situation with these guys ?

If you spend your time worrying about those guys it will ruin your time outdoors. Use deet and/or Permethrin, wash your clothes as soon as you get home, shower and check yourself as best as you can. It's normal to find a Deer tick on you every now and then, just get it off before is sucks on you for 24 hours. On Wednesday Kvaugn and I walked into a nest of them. That is not normal and even freaked me out a bit. However I was out the next day on this hike...

Two summers ago I pulled two fully engorged ticks of me. I had them tested and both came back positive with 2 types of Lymes disease. I called my Doc got some antibiotics and have not had any sign of having problems. Kuruptd bring your ass up here. I here the ticks in CT don't like the way P.R.'s taste anyway, so you have nothing to worry about... :p

Awesome pics Tony, I love seeing what wild edibles other people are able to find in their neck of the woods, thanks for sharing !

I like to see wild edibles that other people come across, too. I haven't had a tick attached to me in a while, but I have seen a few so far. Hate them, but they will never keep me away from the woods. Too much fun out there.

Thanks for the pics

Great pics Tony. I see your rockin' your new bushcraft knife challenge blade- nice.

Lots of wild edibles. Did you harvest any?

Awesome photos Tony, good to see some color coming into the world up there. Looks like you guys had a good hike. Here Sawtooth oaks hold leaves almost all winter and they make good tinder too. I have been looking for ramps but haven;t seen any yet.

Thanks Guys.

Mist I need your addy bro. Cool info on Sawtooth Oak. It's like you said, every area has it's little treasures..

Great pics

We nibbled on some Winterberry, but that's it.

I wanted to grab some of the Leeks this morning, but I don't like the look of dirty knees on my suit...
