A "Standard" Trapper

Here's something new for me.......a Trapper. I don't own many trapper patterns; a full size trapper feels just great in the hand, but at 4 1/4" they tend not to be real pocket "friendly". Nonetheless, I have been meaning to a add a full size Trapper to my small collection of knives.

In the late '90's, post- Case, Jim Parker still owned/leased (?) the Case Family Tree brand names.....Platts, Standard, Crandall, and Kinfolks.....I'm not sure about Little Valley. (Before he passed on Parker sold them back to the present Case owners, Zippo). Parker had some knives made through Blue Grass, ( God...it seems as if EVERYTHING went through Blue Grass) but manufactured by Queen under the Case Family Brands names. Apparently some patterns were made at the Olbertz (Bulldog) Factory in Solingen. This particular knife was made by Queen however, and it has the typical tight, quality detailed finish you find in their work. Terrific walk and talk....and SHARP. The blades are highly polished: one side of the the clip blade tang has the year of manufacture, 1997, and on the other side "Standard Knife Co". On that same blade is etched CS...the blades are carbon steel ! The rather "different" arrow-head shield is interesting. The stag handles are like nothing I have quite seen up close before. I have several other stag handled knives....this one is not "barky", nor burnt, nor particularly colorfully orange and brown.....the stag looks really old, and weathered....as if it had been lying around on a forest floor for ages. I like the look. Any who, this "Reproduction" Standard Knife is real nice........I guess there are others out there with handsome antique jigged bone handles.....some say Platts, some Crandall, some Kinfolks and some like mine say Standard ...and they're pretty reasonably priced...under $50 for a Queen made knife with carbon blades ! ....anyone else own one ?
( The photos are from eBay....although I have received the knife I haven't had the time to properly photograph it.)

-Cheers to all !

Yikes!!! That is one sweet looking trapper Gramps. It has a nice look about it with the arrow shield and great looking stag. Thanks for sharing..

Gramps. I don't own any of the Family Tree trappers but I do own a set ( five pieces ) of the Sunfish pattern with the Family Tree tang stamps. They seem to have been made in Olbertz due to the fact that they are a lot like the Bulldog Brand Sunfish. Same quality and blade shape but different handle material. I'll try and get a photo of them. Nice knives.

I didn't know the Family Tree Sunfish were made in Germany.....I am pretty sure the congress patterns were because the look so much like Bulldogs. I would very much like to see those Sunfish. Greg, you have an amazing collection of traditional folding knives. I ALWAYS enjoy seeing what you have to share with us ! Are the Sunfish celluloids ?.....I know you have some truly beautiful celluloids !

-My best !

Sweet looking trapper, Gramps! That stag and the shield give it a nice vintage look. Just different enough to standout.

I have that same trapper and its a beauty....I think only 100 were made circa 1997. Be forewarned it is stainless steel, as were all of the Family Tree knives that Queen made, I dont know about the Solingen made FT knives.

.....I assumed the "CS" stamped on the clip blade stood for "carbon steel"....the seller told me it was carbon. However, I believe your report knifeaholic......you would know for certain if anyone. Thanks for the update. It's still well made even if the blades are stainless....but I'm a bit disappointed. I guess its always "caveat emptor" on eBay !

-My Best regards !

Here are the Family Tree Sunfish. The knife on top is a Bulldog. The ones below are very similar, leading me to believe that they were built in Olbertz.

You know Greg, I've never been big on the Sunfish pattern...that's until I saw these ! Each one seems nicer than the one above. BEAUTIFUL bone handles....and how could you not just love that Glitter Stripe ? I bet God carries a Glitter Stripe in some pattern on cloudy days ! :D

-My best !

My trapper is the same as yours, Gramps, but it does not have CS stamped on it I dont think. I will look soon. When these came out in the late 90's. I actually called Parkers to ask about the blade steel and was told it was stainless...that's all I have to go on.
