Hello everybody.
I don't post often on the forum but do read most of the posts here. Tonight I felt it's time to tell you all a story.
I got into knives thanks to my grandfather. He gave me my first knife when I was a little boy. It looked somewhat like a Victorinox classic but it had yellow scales. I still have it.
My grandfather himself had a sodbuster marked "made in Germany". The knife was surely 30 years old and had a dark patina from continuous use and the blade was already more then 50% sharpened away. He always used this single knife and I'm sure he wouldn't have wanted any other. It was always on the same spot in one of the kitchen drawers ready to travel along with when he went out of the house.
He told me he bought it from a traveling tradesman when he had just moved into his house.
During my youth we spent countless hours in the woods together making bows, arrows, swords and all kinds of stuff. These are treasured memories to me.
Along the years I acquired more then a few knives: SAK's, an Opinel, two Herder sodbusters, a BM Griptilian, a Spyderco Military and even a CR Sebenza. I used most of them for some time but always dreamt of buying a new one.
Unfortunately my grandfather passed away a few months ago. I still miss him very much. I now have his sodbuster is my collection and I'll treasure it for the rest of my life!
Shortly after this I moved out of my parent's house. My brother (who I love dearly!) gave me a Spyderco Tenacious as a present. From the moment I received this knife I had the feeling that this should become 'my knife'.
My trusty user that should be 50% worn away in 30 or even 40 years from now. The knife I'll use to teach my grandson to whittle his first arrow from a stick.
I do like this idea. I do hope the world won't have changed so much by then that knives won't be accepted.
I suspect many of you guys got into knives through your father or grandfather. Perhaps we all share similar stories like this.
Do any of you guys have a true user like this? A knife that stands by you for every job? One to pass along to your grandson someday?
Hope I haven't bored you guys with my writings. If I find the time I'll post some knife pic's for you guys later on.
Kind regards
