I've just received a Buck Strider 880 which I bought in Ebay. But the knife seems different from what I know. Its closed length is 4 1/16'' and blade 2 7/8. One side of the blade is marked "STRIDER" and "BUCK"; The other side "BOS" next line "BG-42" next line "U.S.A.". I thought it was a Buck Strider Mini, but I learned that the Buck Strider Mini made from BG-42 steel are "1st Product Run", but mine has no such mark. Could anyone tell me the actual name of this knife? Thanks.

dbtsing,I have the same knife. My understanding is that the first 500 Striders had BG-42 blade steel and were marked 1st Production Run on the blade. Then the regular production models were ATS-34.But apparently some of the first regular production models had Bg-42 blade steel,i'm not sure how many
but you do see them once in a while, but not very often.
As far as the name of the knife. The box is marked Mini Strider SP

Thanks Sleyer. I was confused because the knife was sold in a Buck 880 box and the seller said on Ebay that the knife is a 880. It seems that this one is a good collection for Mini Strider. Thanks again.

dbtsing i dont believe that is the correct box for your knife. The model no.on my Strider's box is B881-SP-0

Sleyer, I don't believe it either. The guy sold me the knife with a B880-SP-0 box. That is why I was confused.

Yep, that's the wrong box. The 880 is the full sized model with a closed length of 5 3/8" & blade length of 3 7/8".

I just bought an 881 for my wife and there is a little play in the blade. Is this normal for this knife? It is in perfect unused condition.

ttrego there should'nt be any blade play.Mine locks up tight with no vertical or side to side blade play. You might try adjusting the pivot screws on your knife.Go slow with the adjustment and dont overtighten, because the blade will become hard to open.Your trying to maintain the correct balance of eliminating the blade play, and keep the smoothness of operation.
If your not comfortable with doing this yourself send it to Buck for service and they'll take care of it for you.

I had one with bad blade play. There was an odd number of washers (two on one side, one on the other). It was like they didn't have the correct size washer, so they got it as close as they could. There was no correct pivot adjustment, the parts just didn't fit. There was also something else wrong, I forget what. I was told to send it in to be fixed, but I was kind of unhappy that such a thing left the factory, so I just returned it. I kind of wish I had it repaired now because it was a cool knife, but that's life.

I will fix this one as it is a great knife (once I get rid of the blade play). But that is bad that a knife at that price point would get out not correct. But man, it is going to be awesome when I fix it! The more I look at it, the more I wonder if it might mysteriously wind up in MY stocking!!! :D

This was the 1st design. I redesigned it about 3 years ago to get rid of all the problems. The washer config correct at the time, but excatly why I redesigned it.

Yeah, people told me it was fine after being fixed. Like I said, I wish I had it fixed instead of returning it because now I wish I had one. There's always ebay!

The 881 Mini is a great little folder. I have three of them. Each one is so close to identical that you would be hard pressed to tell them apart, but each one does have a tiny bit of movement if you push hard on the spine of the blade. You can feel the blade move a bit back and forth. Vertical play I guess you'd call it but it is so slight that it can hardly be considered outside of acceptable tolerances.

What I notice specifically is that you can push down on the blades and separate the blade from the blade stop when the blade is opened. This is simply with pressure applied to the spine of the blade. They are all the same way so I think as far as that kind of play is concerned they have it and it must be part of the design.

The one 880 that I got to see briefly that was a friend of mines was exactly the same way as all my 881s are in this play in the blade. I have trouble believing I got three knives with the exact same fault and that his was this way also by mere coincidence.

I notice that all three of my 881s have the blade off center when closed with each one more toward the non locking side. I guess this is from the heavy duty thickness of the lock. I have two of the SP model and one is the SPX.

I carry one of my three quite often and really like the looks on peoples faces when they notice what a little giant of a knife it is. Too bad Buck discontinued it. Other than these little quirks that seem to be rather consistant in the design they are some solid overbuilt knives.
