I've recently aquired a 2-dot 110 and the handle appears to have 2 different kinds of wood, one side dark and one light.

At first I thought the light side had been sun bleached, but it is very even in color all around. The spine shot shows this clearly. Anybody know what this could be? It appears to be factory installed.

Blue Sky,
Ebony comes in different shades and I have seen many 110s and 112s with similarly mismatched scales. I am confident your knife came from the factory as it is now.
I have also seen 110s with light scales on both sides. I personally like the scales that have the striped look and of course, matched inlays are preferable.
Hope that helps.

I've also seen knives that laid in a display on one side to long do this, the scale facing up is exposed to more light and given enough time will fade until it is much lighter than the other side.

howdy blue sky,
i have had one jest as you describe and seen one fadefrom the sun as The Last Confederate described. a fix that the man with the faded one told me he was going to do was to take a vinger water mix with a bit of steel wool in it soked for several days and wet the wood with it after cleaning it of any oils. this he said would ebonize or blacken the wood produceing a good match. note i have not tryed this my self though i have seen other referances to it in wood workers mag's.. i would only do this on a faded side... as i like dark wood myself...

Hmmm, very interesting 334dave. I'm not sure I'm ready to try something like that just yet, but thanks. If I do, I'll post the results. Maybe I'll test it out on something else first...

Back when that 110 was made there was an operation in the production line called "match wood", or something like that. The person was supposed to make sure that the inlays were fairly close side to side. Every now and then you see one that obviously missed that step. I like the oddball ones like that personally, especially when there is light and dark in the same inlay, looks really cool.
