A stroll through the mountains

For Thanksgiving this year, we met my brother in law and his family at a house they rented for the week just outside of Ellijay, GA. We have driven through the area numerous times before on our way to Florida but have never really had a chance to stop. Everyone had a great time and the area is just beautiful. The house was a few hundred yards from the Coosawattee River (which was the basis of the fictional "Cahulawassee River" in the film Deliverance and, I believe, much of the film was shot in the area) and we were greeted each morning with a lovely scene of the river's course through the mountains highlighted by a snake of fog following it's path through the surrounding country. The area is filled with game and the deer seem especially plentiful.

The day after Thanksgiving, we decided to rent horses and go for a trail ride in the mountains. The stable that we went to was just outside of Fort Mountain State Park and, since we arrived several hours early, we grabbed a bottle of wine and some snacks and took off down the trail for a little hiking and sightseeing. The 2500'+ elevation provided a commanding view and was quite a change for this flatlander from Illinois. The trails were moderately challenging but not too bad and the view was really worth the small effort.

A few pics from the trail....

I would not hesitate to visit the area again and we have already talked about possibly heading up there this summer when we can enjoy some of the warm weather activities like tubing and kayaking. It is always good to have a chance to take a few days off and get away for a bit and this was a great place to do it!

The EDC performed well, it is the perfect size for a small personal blade and does not either get in the way or look at all out of place. The peppered salami, aged cheddar and farmer's cheese was no match for it either!

Looks like a nice place. Thanks for sharing the pics.
