A survival scenario from around here

Pretty good. Taking two hours to light the fire suggests a bit more practice is needed but they did it.

Yes, I don't know why he tried to start on bare snow, throw a few evergreen boughs down for a base at least. I try not to be too judgmental these days though. Every situation can have its own unique characteristics/problems. I do say that they would have a much worse go if the temp wasn't -5, but -25 or 35. Two hours to start a fire with wet clothes would be a death sentence then, or at least a loss of body parts. I do know from my own experience that local materials can be hard to light in the winter.

Having tried P.J. and cotton here in Michigan this January, Using green, ice coated wood in the snow at night after an ice storm at about 15 deg. F (to try to simulate worst case scenario) I can say that 2 hours is a bit long. I am no wilderness expert either. I think it was 30 minutes from first twig to marshmellow roasting time.

Now, without P.J. & cotton or other prepared tinders, I was simply unsuccessful. I gave up after an hour.

Of course, I wansn't soaked from head to toe.
