First to paint the picture ..... I stop by the local gun/knife stores on a regular basis . At one particular store they have had a Specwar B 50/50 dated 9/9 in the case for over a year . The reason why is it has been abused and made to wear a funny coating . The owner (I was told ) was a military man , and put knife to use overseas . He scratched it up good , but needed a black blade for certain reasons ( this is a military town with a ranger unit based here) . To remedy the the reflection problem he carried a touchup marker for guns , kind of like a black perm marker . When he got back to states , he bought a commander and traded the SPECWAR on some shooting supplies . I have handled this knife once a month for over a year now , but the store owner was to worried about his dust collection (the price he had on it was $109.00) . I went by today , and he finaly had pitty on me and the knife . I walked out of the store with it for $20 ( did I get a good deal ?) .

Now here is my delema ... I would like to refurbish this old warrior (remove the remainder of the black coating , polish the blade ) and retire it to my pocket . I just need some tips on how to do this . Also , I would like to know if this is one of the "good" ones or not (manufactures date 9/9). Any help or coments would be a great help .

EH:

$20.00 for a 99 Specwar! That must be the score of the decade. :D

There are several strings concerning the "satinizing" of EKI Blades. Go into the forum 'search feature' and look under either; satin project or satinizing. I'm sure you'll have more than enough information there to start your project.

Good luck.

Edd......

I don't post often, but noticed your question as to whether or not your "99" is one of the good ones or not. Figured I may have your answer.

I have a '98 Specwar A 50/50. It's one of the good ones. You can tell by liner/scale thickness (thicker than current production, just like the Commanders), but perhaps the easiest way is by checking the screws in the scales. Does it have 3 spaced evenly (like the Commander), or just two to the rear (like the Mini Commander)?
If three, then it is probably a good one. If just the two at the rear, then it is probably of the newer style like current production.

However, I'd still go with the blade clean-up, even if it is of vintage variety. It won't hurt it any (value or otherwise), as the Black-T is not indestructible by any means.

The one I have has three screws , and is very solid . I have started sanding , and all of the scratches were in the coating only . Also , there are no nicks in blade . If anyone is interested I can get a LNIB dreen handled RAVEN for $100.00 . Let me know , and I'll work the deal up .

I polished the blade , liners, all contact points (liners, pivot screw contact area) and all hardware except the clip (all screw heads). Looks great , and the action is as smooth as a custom ...
Thanks for the help .

Now all I need is a SKULL clip and I will be set .

Edd,I'm glad for You.That sounds like a great deal to Me.I'm currently waiting for a Specwar to show up from a trade.I'd be really happy if it is a '99 like Yours.tom.:D
