I decided to post this here in Shop Talk as this is more of a collaborative effort for me, an exercise in coaching a beginner on how to make a knife.

For the last year and a half I have had the pleasure of working with my good friend Terry, one of Sydney, Nova Scotia's finest on what turned out to be a very ambitious project. He wanted to make a "simple" piece in an initial effort to learn the craft of knife making. This piece was made while working only on Saturdays. He wanted to see how I made both my wood and leather sheaths, so this piece comes with both.

Terry designed the piece and selected all of the materials, then we collaborated on the construction techniques. Terry also did about 80% of the hand work. He drew out a tanto-esque design with a westernized grind, then added the high contrast of highly figured Maple and Ebony.
There are several aspects of this knife/sheath that I would have done differently, but in the end, this is Terry's knife, its well made, and it is true to his vision.

Black Moon Tanto w/ Two Sheaths

Blade: 7 1/2" of forged 1095 with a clay-backed quench, full flat ground, hand sanded to 1000 grit then etched and polished to reveal the wispy hamon
Handle: Boldly figured Cape Breton Red Maple and Ebony with a copper "tsuba"
Wood Sheath: Figured Cape Breton Red Maple with ebony welt, inlays, and "shitodome", and a Moose hide "sageo".
Leather Sheath: Premium 6/7 oz veg tanned leather(RJF), fully leather lined, figured Cape Breton Red Maple inlay, with copper and ebony 'frog'.

A few simple photos. (better pics of the whole blade coming soon):

Excellent knife and sheaths. I love hammered copper fittings. First class workmanship.
