A testament to the greatest multi tool ever

I bought my first charge in 07 in afghanistan. It was a charge alx and it was somewhere around $90. I am an aircraft mechanic and I have used it every work day since. I have abused and neglected it. I've used the bits with the other handle at a 90 degree angle to get more leverage. I've broken torques with the drivers that a regular screw driver couldnt handle (at least not with my strength). I've loosened bolts with the pliers and have done endless amounts of lockwire with it. I've cut metal shipping bands with the wire cutters and many zip ties. I've used the file to sharpen my pocket knives when in a pinch. I've used it as a hammer and a pry bar. I've dropped it, over and over and over. I once dropped it from the tail of an apache and onto concrete. I used the eye glass screw driver as an awl and eventually broke it. I also broke the tabs on the insides of the handles that push the heads of the pliers out. Everything else works great. It works beautifully. The pliers have no more play in them then they did when they were brand new. This multi tool is perfect, in every single way. There isn't a single thing I would change about it. I like it so much I traded for a brand new one even though mine is still perfectly usable in every way. I've had a sog power lock, a leatherman core, a leatherman supertool 300, a leatherman fuse, a skeletool and 2 gerbers. None of them even come close to comparing. Leatherman really got this one right and knew what they were doing. And my new one even has beefier tabs for the plier heads and a more useful eye glass driver. Thank you leatherman for listening to your customers.

I really like all my LM products mainly the WAVE.
(BTW those pics are huge try resizing)

LM does make some excellent stuff and seems to pay attention to what is wanted and needed.

I am a tad concerned that an aircraft mechanics goto tool is a MT though :D

It's sort of more of a crew chief thing. Not the best at anything but very good at everything. Our leathermans are used day in day out for stuff like panels. Obviously they wouldnt get used on anything that might get destroyed like bolts that have to be reused. Most of us couldn't live with out them.

Ah, ok, perfectly reasonable...I feel less worried now. ;)

Did you buy it at the BAF or KAF PX? I bought mine at FOB Sharana, and the biggest gripe I had was the black coating. Seems every multi tool the PX sells is black, just like every regular knife they sell is a combo edge blade. Anyway, the black stuff would rub off onto my hands when I used it. Took a lot of rubbing with a towel and paper towels to get the excess black off the handles so it wouldn't get on my hands.

That's probably NOT A GUT HOOK pictured- but a "WEBBING CUTTER" - They change the tool just for military purposes! At least in name!
Peace

From an Infantryman's point of view (and any good hunter): The reason for the Black on ALL of their blades is probably because shiny knife blades reflect light and make you a target that can be seen from miles away. All infantrymen learn early on to blacken out all shiny objects and to dampen any sound you make while walking. I.e. tape keys together and tape up your watch face or take it off altogether and carry it in your pocket. I would imagine that whatever PX you went to was specifically told to order black blades for a reason.

Kaosu, let me know if you want to sell or trade that sucker some day. I have a thing for beater multitools.

Thanks for your Service ! Glad the tool has given you that kind of service , sounds like very high praise indeed . Glad to hear that Multi's are earning their keep .

I remember the original Leatherman PST's being used by squadron guys when I was in the navy, mid- to late 80's. EVERYBODY wanted one, not just because it was a cool tool, but because it was so useful for a lot of jobs. Glad to see this one served you so well; I have a Surge, and it's an amazing piece of engineering, for sure.

kaosu04, Medic1210, and any of you who serve or have served: thanks for your service. It does mean a lot to many of us.

I bought mine in salerno where I spent most of my time. I spent about a month in bagram and 2 weeks in kandahar though. A px state side is like that too. You can only get a plain edge in a px if that model only comes in plain edge. I never had an issue with the black stuff rubbing off on mine, but my hands were often dirty so maybe I didnt notice.

Thanks for the offer but I wouldn't want to get rid of it unless it were some crazy price, like more or equal to what I paid for it.

Yeah, I get the reason. I was more talking about the fact that the black on the leatherman rubs off on your hand, almost like it was shoe polish.

Ahh, rocket city... I've not been there, but had a buddy of mine spend some time over there. Currently I'm at FOB Shank, which when you were here was possibly not even here, or if so, it was a very small FOB. Now it's grown quite a bit, and even has an airwing as well as a C17 runway. What sucks is, as big as this base is, you'd think it would have an AAFES run PX, but nope, it only has a small military run PX with very limited supplies. They are supposed to build an AAFES pretty soon though.

I was in Pul-E-Alam, Logar at the small school up the street, SSG Shank was killed by an IED on that Deployment, at the time we only had about 50 Americans covering the entire province. I hear FOB Shank holds like alot. I will not say the number here.

It looks like that ALX is ready for more! One of my favorites is the Charge XTi, which is very similar except the titanium handles.
