A Thai jungle chopper ... carry-on

In 2007 I spent several weeks in rural Thailand as I do often. But this time I had been in the bush for several weeks sort of isolated from the normal rules of flying. I had been just jumping on small prop planes and doing small jumps to different parts of the Issan region - no security checking anything.

I get on Thai Airways and as I am boarding I realize I still have a small chopper that a local villager gave me strapped to my backpack. I went through the checkpoint and right on to my flight to Laos with this strapped on me.

As you can see in the last picture there are still some local bug guts inside!

The "sheath" is just some PVC piping cut with a hacksaw that did the job just fine. All of the Busse's and pretty choppers that I have, this one still means the most to me. It has been convexed on river rocks by the previous owner.

So I guess the folks that really use choppers everyday, they know what works and use what works. They keep it simple. Sometimes I tend to over-buy when all I need is a big ugly chunk of sharpness like this one.

LOL! We do exactly the same thing with the PVC pipe, also for saws!

Here in the Philippines, a similar blade pattern is what we call a panabas (a contraction of pang tabas or "something to hack/whack with").

Thanks for sharing!

Very cool indeed! Great airport security....make you feel really safe right? And no problems at the destination airport?

GREAT story! That is one rough-as-hell, useful-as-heaven, looking chopper! Very nice!
