First of all I want to thank my nephew MauiRob for telling us quite some time ago, an easier and quicker way to read the forums.
I'm pretty sure the newbies here may not know about doing this, but then on the other hand most people are a lot more "comp-pooter";) literate than I.:p
I at least am pretty dayumed sure they haven't seen Rob's old post about it

Anyway:
Rob said to right click on the thread we wanted to read and open it in a new window. Then when you're through reading all you have to do is close it and go to the next thread, right click and open it in a new window, etc. etc. etc.:D
This has saved me countless hours!!!! I even use the system when answering or making a new post. You do have to wait until the bot tells you the post has been accepted.;)
Try it, you might find it easy as well.:)

The possible help I have for everyone is an url for a FREE download to stop those pesky popup ads!!!!!!!
Here.
I have used it for a couple of weeks now and it has saved me untold stress in dealing with those damned hated things.
It works on About.com, Geocities and other dot-coms that persist in using those damned popups!!!!
To me they're just like those damned telemarketers and I would never buy anything from either.
I sent an icon to my desktop so it would be easier to turn back on should I have to exit it for awhile as in some websites that use integral popups for their own info.
I did that just awhile ago and forgot to turn my popup stopper back on , went to another website and picked up 2 damned ads, promptly turned it back on again!!!!
I hope you find it as helpful as I have provided y'all didn't already know about it.:D

Edit:
Had to fix a link.

Many thanks for the add blocker, much better than the one I was using before.:)

Thanks for the tips. Will enjoy not having those stupid ads show up:D

There is another small program out there called Ad-aware that stops all those small programs and cookies from spying on you.

You can download it here.

If anyone is using the new Netscape I can walk you through blocking pop-ups. I'd do it now, but I'm sleepy. If anyone's interested (and if I'm not the ONLY Netscape user here) tell me and I'll sit down and write it out. If you do it right, it's pretty effective.

Download and install Pop-up first
Then install Ad-aware

Reason? Ad-aware will remove any "extra" programs that often get added in these "free" programs.

Stop Netscape, Internet Explorer, Mozilla, and desktop pop-up windows with the latest upgrade of this small tool, now with added support for Mozilla and new technology to block Messenger Service and GAIN adserver desktop ads. There's no need to adjust proxy settings, or add sites to a list. Pop-Up Stopper will not strip Web images or slow your browser. You can allow pop-up windows only when you want them. User settings allow various pop-up notifications, such as a flashing icon or new, fun sounds. Simply hold down the Control (CTRL) or Shift key to allow selective pop-up windows; but most new links should open automatically. Pop-Up Stopper is not advertising supported, nor does it require registration, and no information is collected from or about product users.

Pop-Up Stopper is very small and easy to use. It is complete with full install and uninstall, a complete setup wizard and online help file, and free unlimited tech support. The latest version includes optional automatic updates, new ad-blocking technology, an easier user interface, more sound and visual notifications to play when an ad is blocked, and a full online help database. User requests for additional sound notifications to show when an ad is blocked have also been added.

Be sure to read a few user reviews before you install it:

Ad-Aware is, truthfully, a much better and more effective program.

Yvsa - you NEED this program. It's safe and easy to use.

More info about Ad-aware:

----------------------------------------------------
Publisher's Description

With its ability to scan your RAM, Registry, hard drives, and external storage devices for known data mining, advertising, and tracking components, Ad-aware can easily rid your system of these tracking components, allowing you to maintain a higher degree of privacy while you surf the Web.

The redesigned user interface improvements include more flexibility and control. This includes user-defined file sizes, which speeds up the scanning process by excluding files that it recognizes as clean. Other advanced features include automatic quarantine and recycle bin storage of removed components, an all-new viewer for backup archives that allows you to quickly and easily review components that have been removed and stored for future restoration, and an integrated reference file updater that can automatically search for new reference files when Ad-aware is started. Be aware that some ad-supported programs, such as GoZilla Free, will no longer function if you remove their ad modules.

----------------------------------------------------

The review makes a note than a few other programs won't work with Ad-aware. However, they are all programs that are problematic, including download.com's Kontiki software which is absolutely awful. Download Accelerator is faster and better than GoZilla which is full of ads, etc.

We've been using Ad-aware at home for several months and have been very pleased with the amount of junk that it's caught. You'd think that the anti-virus software would at least have an option of filtering this out.

If you are on Netscape there's a pop up program built in.

Click on Edit on the very top line.
Click on Preferences from the Edit menu.
Scroll down the list to Privacy/Security.
Open the P/S and there will be a pop up program. Open and follow the instructions.

I installed Pop Up Stopper before I knew of the built in program. Used on the Newt Livesay forum which had previously impossible to read as pop-ups came up faster than I could delete them. Pop Up Stopper worked. Not one popup got thru. Good enough for me. Thanks Elder Bro.

Dan is this all on Ad-Aware?

Dan I've had Ad-Aware for quite some time, but hadn't accessed it before last night.
I'm not sure how to set the parameters on it. I don't like it running on "startup" and when I tried to make it quit doing that while still maintaing its usefullness it locked my computer up 3 different times.:(
I finally got back in and turned off everything in it just like it was before I messed with it.
Everything is working now as it did before, but I still don't have anything set on the program.
I have McAfee security which is what was on the HP when I got it. I've installed ZoneAlarm for a free firewall a long time ago and with what I have everything seems alright, but I also know that just about when you get to thinking like that that something crappy can
happen.
One should never get complacent hunh?;)
Do I need to uninstall the Popup Stopper and Ad-Aware I have now and then reinstall the Ad-Aware by downloading the popup first?

I downloaded the Popup Stopper way after I downloaded the Ad-Aware, but I guess since I had never activated it then it didn't matter?

Many Thanks!!!!:)

Edited to fix the code, that is if I ever get it right.

It really helps. I always do the same if I am at home using my mother's slow connection.

For stopping pop-ups I use Opera.

It is a web browser that stops pop-ups if you set it to do so, but it is also so fast for browsing the web that if you have a slow connection it feels like you have upgraded your connection to something several times faster. I haven't used Internet Explorer or Netscape since I got Opera two years ago. Would be like going back to the stone age.

Yvsa,

Sorry if I made it more confusing than it should be.

Use Ad-aware for nailing "spy-ware". You only need to use it every once in a while.

Keep using pop-up stopper for the annoying popup windows.

Dan
