i just thought of a potential problem with a certain peice common gear:

in the case of knife sheaths with firesteel loops attached, leather and kydex, what happens when you use your firesteel and it wears down to a smaller diameter, and it becomes too loose to stay in the loop so you can't carry it with your knife anymore?

what happens when you decide no problem i will just put the worn one in a kit and put a new one in the loop...but when you had the sheath made for the knife, you sent in your already worn firesteel for fitting with the knife? this means that the loop will be too small for a new firesteel.

just something to consider...

And, of course, they don't like to get wet. Mine lives in a ziplok with tinder - or in some other waterproof container..

I have a long lanyard on my firesteel that I wrap around the base of the loop and it keeps my firesteel nice and safe.

Time for a new FireSteel :D

I thing I have around 50 extra in my "Survival Cabinet"

Hey Guys...

First of all I press All of my firesteel loops from Brand new firesteels, so they are all the same...

There is No problem what so ever with firesteels getting wet...
If you wipe them down with oil, or give them a quick paint job with clear nail polish,, they'll last for ever..Keep an eye on them and theres No problem at all..
I've only lost or damaged one firesteel that was left in a kit in the barn..The rod is very pitted,, but still works...

If you do wear out a rod in one of my firesteel loops, it's very simple to fit yuorself..
Dip the end of the firesttel holder,,while still on the sheath in hot water,, let it get slightly soft,,and press an indent into the back of the holder..While still warm,, insert the rod...

Bingo,, that it,, very simple..

I have let to have anyone email me and tell me the firesteel is worn and doesn't fit in the holder,, and I've made Hundreds upon hundreds of them for several years now..Not one person that I know of has had a problem with it...

It would literally take you Years and hundreds if not thousands of scrapes to whittle one down...

I can't speak for leather loops though...
