Hello, a tip that might be funny/helpful/ludicrous for anyone who full quenches then torch tempers the spines on they're blades. I was welding today(day job) and was noticing that the colors run off a weld bead on semi polished bit o steel pretty well and evenly and quite controllable. If you have a welder, maybe try running a weld bead along the spine until the colors run to your taste, then grind off the excess, i'll have to try this firsthand to really see if it is plausible or not, or maybe someone can come and add if they have tried it.

You're adding another variable and complications. Remember tempering takes time ,welding is too fast.Just use the torch ,always keeping it moving. Never apply torch to edge and especially not the tip.

D'oh. maybe an initial temper with the welder so that you still have clean silver color(not even straw yet) but with a blue/purple spine, then a seperate temper cycle at an hour or two at the proper temperature to temper the rest of the edge.

Or just use W2 and, in theory, the interior of the thicker portions of a good sized blade will never get totally hard no matter how hard you try...at least with oil.:D

Sam, Take a deep breath and relax!!!! Your thinking too much!:D
