Guys I have been working on putting a real "oil finish" on my new Walnut Flute tuned in the key of F# from HighSpirits.com and discovered that 12 gauge bore cloths are the perfect size for putting the *boiled linseed oil on the surface of the wood.
It was quite by accident as most discoveries are. I had no old rags cut up and I needed one pronto and none was to be had. Then I spied the package of 12 gauge bore cloths laying on my shelf that had never been opened.
I tore the package open and pulled several of the cloths out, grabbed one and "viola" (wahla) my problem was solved!!!!
There's several advantages to using these. They're cheap, small and disposable and best of all they don't leave any lint behind, at least with the *BLO.
I soaked one cloth with the BLO and applied it to the Flute and the Fetish that sets on top and put them in their special place to soak up and dry as much as possible.
I laid the single cloth over a tool on my bench for further service the next day.
This can be safely done as long as there's plenty of airflow around the cloth so that spontaneous combustion doesn't take place.
I rewet the cloth this morning with the BLO and put on another coat to soak in and dry today, probably will take 2 days with all the humidity we now have.
I will wipe off any excess in a couple of hours or so and let dry the rest of the day, and maybe tomorrow before rubbing it down by hand.
For anyone that doesn't know the average human hand is equal to 6,000 grit paper.
I can see the possibility of using even the .22 size patches for putting on heavier coats of Tru-Oil and the like for khuk handles.
The possibilities are endless!!!!
Will work well for cleaning as well.
