I would like to have a portable and easy tool to set my edge angles. For now I use my 2X72 belt grinder, but I would love to have a solution that I would carry it to some customers who have some really blunt or damaged edged kitchen knives. Some times I pick some of those and grind a proper edge at my shop then I drive to give those knives. But it is really a waste of time for a penny.

So I came up with an idea to have a portable belt sander attached with an angle adjustable platen. I have found a sander that comes with table mounting clamps.

I sketched a plan of how to make the platen.
What do you think of this device, anyone using a similar system?

I would thing somthing like a 1x30 belt sander would be light enough for you to take with you and give a better selection of belt. Plus the ones I've seen have tables.

Just a thought.

In agree with scout77. A 2X42 or even a 1X30 will be portable, safer, and more versatile than trying to make a belt sander do what it was not intended to do. Grinding jigs will also be easier to set up.

I also remember seeing someone on here mention that they made their first knife with a belt sander clamped upside down but it kind of destroyed the belt sander with all the metal filings.

Thanks guys, thats what I needed. I was not sure if I was on the right path. Back to the belt grinders then ...

Emre,

An issue I've had trying a similar jig setup was scratching the blade and keeping the blade flat on the table surface. A better solution might be a clamp that clamps the blade and hinges into contact with the belt rather than sliding the blade.

Thanks Nathan,
