A tourist in need of an advice with khukuri

Hello!

I just (stupidly?) did buy a Windlass Steel's khukuri.
I didn't know it was not sharpened, at all. Dull like a wooden spoon.

Well, I guess I'll sharpen it myself. Got couple files and stones,
and if I screw it up and ruin that blade, it's not the end of the wolrd.
One has to start and learn sometimes..

So the question is:
Should I use the file on blade's edge back and forth,
or from the edge toward spine,
or from spine toward edge?

Any help and suggestions are greatly appreciated, Thank You!

One of those was my first kukri as a kid. I got my best edge draw filing it from tip to karda. Then I finished up with stones and sand paper.

I'm not sure if you know what draw filing is, so here's a short video of a man draw filing an axe -

Take heart, while not marvels of fit and finish, the Windlass models aren't totally horrible once edged :).

For a couple of bucks you can buy a smaller machete to learn on. While not the greatest, most Windlass stuff is pretty well made and should be a nice tool if you do it well..

File should be moved into the edge, or along it (draw file) to finish and flatten out the bevel. If you give it a slight sweep from right to left it tends to not load up as much - get a file card or wire brush to keep it clean. An oversized dowel for the handle is a big help.

What's your time worth per hour?
Unless you are into grinding anyways it might be cheaper to buy a properly hardened shaped and sharpened Kuk with a decent warranty.

Check out our BF sub forum of
Himalyan Import.
Lots of Kuks there and also helpful people who might have advice on how to get yours up to specs more easily.

Thanks for the help tltt and HeavyHanded! :) Great links!
I started working my khukuri, looks ok, yet much to do..

Jens Schuez, I got some free time, so it's no prob if I spend time on this,
at least I will learn...something, I hope :)
I'll check out the IH forum surely, thanks!

bucketstove, I never saw they's sell sharpened versions,
at least where I got mine there wasn't even hint of sharpened versions.

Hi,
if you search for "Windlass Steelcrafts Khukuri" the official website links to the us/canada shoppers website which can be found with "Atlanta Cutlery Corp Officer's Kukri - Knives"
Say something like
Factory Edge - Price
Sharpened - Price: +15
Factory Edge w/ Initials - Price: +5
