Well I recieved this from JP this week & although its not all fancy damascus & gold I have always thought of it as the perfect kukri, & the pinnacle of his collection for lines & quality.

And I know John belives its of a quality equal to any bladed weapon of any type hes ever seen.

upon opening the box, I could instanly see & feel why he was of that opinion..

It was one of the kukris dearest & nearest to his heart so I am greatfull that when the he felt it was the time to pass it on he wanted me to have it. {for the suitable recompense of course.} Its good for both of us, for me to have a suitable piece from the "Powell collection."

After studing it it for many hours over the past 2 days including 9x lens examination of every piece of workmanship on it I have to say I can only say it is perfection in steel.

Its clearly English made, most likely in London by a gunsmith/cutler .

It reminds me of the best Holland & Holland or Purdy type work.

It is well balanced & moves very well, the grip would be tough for treefelling but provides excelent grip if involved one was involved in wetter work.

It rings like a bell over the majority of the blade.

If civilisation collasped tommorow & I had to go venturing with just one kukri on my belt, this would have to be it.

Anyway heres a few of my snaps & a few of John photographs, which between them might show at least a small part of its beuty.

I am very proud to have this peace from the Powell collection.

Respect to John indeed.

I realise it wont be to evryones taste, but I am truly over the moon with it.

Wow. Spiral that is beautiful. Truly a masterpiece.

Absolutely beautiful blade. Looks a lot like a Foxy Folly, my favorite HI

I've always liked that khukuri, it was my favorite out of all of JP's knives. Congratulations on your acquisition, that is a specimen any collector would be proud of.

I wonder why the fullers on modern khukuris don't go all the way to the bolster like they do on this piece. Most of the new ones I've seen have the fullers end roughly at the cho. I like the fullers on this one; it looks much more beautiful and complete.

What is the handle made from Spiral?

Thankyou guys!

I am delighted with it.

The handle is high carbon steel Andy, the checkerings 21 to the inch.

I see what you mean about the old ones now...lovely.

OMG what a beauty!!!

Congrats!

edit: d'oh! Forgot what forum I'm in. Sometimes, which planet. :footinmou:

Exceptional. Don't blame you a bit for feeling that way Spiral. I wish I 1) knew JP well enough to approach him for one of his antique pieces, and 2) had the $ now to do so in any case. I feel like I am missing a great opportunity, and did not know until recently that he was divesting himself of some of his collection for some reason. Having spent the equivalent of a new luxury car on kukris over the past few years I have not a single antique knife as yet. (I can always sell a few things though, and should for the right knife!)

I love how the handle and the bolster are so seemlessly integrated. That handle looks very much like a Highland model in steel, and looks far more modern than its age indicates. Reminds me of the kind of kukri handle that Chris Reeve might make today if he was asked to do one. That maker was very much ahead of his time. Can you imagine what it must have looked like 125 years ago?

Thanks for the wonderful pics.

Cheers Guys.

My true name isnt Simon Mike, Its Jonathan, but online & in the world of knives & kukris I am usualy known as Spiral even to my face.

It good that way as some of my employers in Education, counciling, work with young offenders {15to 21.] etc. wouldnt appreciate or understand all my views etc. that I sometimes share online.

Svashtar if you wish, you know me well enough to send me an email & I will be happy to pass it on to John with an introduction. I am sure he has a few he could offer you. The majority of his collection has aleady gone but the best of them wernt the first ones sold I would guess. {but am happy to be told differently.}

I frequantly have to sell kukri to buy others, I think its what most collectors who are not rich have to do.

I know what you mean about modern appearance but looking at English custom big game rifles , shotguns etc. a lot of it was bieng done in 1880 to superlative quality.

I would say they dont actualy do it qute the same today.;) But others may think differantly.

The fit of parts is as good as ive seen on any anthing ever, including top quality antique jewelry. I can be a perfectionist at times hence my ocasional intolerance to my fellow humans, but I cant find a fault with this one even at 9x magnification.

Glad you like the pics!

Spiral, thanks very much. I have sent you an email, but see that I dropped the ball myself. I joined the RHS forum last year but haven't stopped by for months, and now see that stuff has been selling over there. Between 3 or 4 other forums I kept busy. I should have been paying attention, and may be wasting your time.

Still, I'll look into it, and see what I can do. The last 4 months I have been out of work and that has complicated things.

Best,

Norm
