I ordered the cocobolo grips for my BK2.

But now I'm thinking about removing the black coating on the bottom inch

and putting a convex grind on the blade.

Will I still be shunned from the association of Beckerheads?

Will this look like tiger seat covers on the car in the movie Scarface?

I think Randy goes by mtntrailrunner on (youtube).

I might have learned about him from BushcraftUSA forum, also.

He had 2 sets left at the time.

yeah he goes by something a little different here, stops in from time to time, do a search and you'll see he posted his grips here a couple months back..

I did that exact rehandle for a guy on an old Camillus blank. I have to see if I can find a pic. I used brass corby bolts to attach the scales.

Hell no, I'm a Becker modder from way back. Just post pics. Modding and not posting pics of said mod, will get you shunned for sure:D

And for those of you that wonder why I sharpen the spines of my Beckers, well this is my ESKabar and a GG 3/8" firesteel.

Just what fire steel is that?

Going Gear 3/8" x4" with a deer antler crown for a handle. So called misch metal, its a softer type of ferrocium rod, that Storl sells in his shop. Cheap too, I gots gads of them laying around and in my gear, my wife is wanting another one from her, so, I'll be getting some more soon.

Moose....any rust issues with the finish removed from the blades? I like the look!

Rust? Yeah, it rusts. Has it rusted away to nothing? No. Has any of the rust that I have gotten on my knife taken away from its abilties? No. Its carbon steel. Carbon steel rusts, and the only way to keep it from doing that is to coat it with something.

Doesn't matter what you put on it, paint, epoxy, patina, whatever, if you use it, it will wear the protective coating off. Think about it like this, what part of a knife is important? The edge. Anyone here ever seen an edge rust over? Of course, you sharpen it, it goes away, no different than the body of the blade.

I like carbon steel more than stainless, and I like my blades uncoated. I have never had a knife rust away to nothingness or even to the point that I thought it needed attention. I was backcountry for 9 days once (heaven) and my BK2 never rusted to the point that I thought it needed more than a good wipe on ma britches (Hillbilly for pants). Did it rust? Yep, I basically live in a rainforest, in the summer humidity will stay at 100% for weeks. Never had that orange flaky rust, but I am a user not a knife storer. When it rusts, I hit it with some 0000 steel wool and mineral oil, or just mineral oil. Either way, my knives stand a better chance of me breaking them, rather than rusting away to nothing.

I don't worry about rust or a stain on my blade, no more than I worry about a sunburn on my skin.

I hope this helps.

Personal choice when the BKT train hits Ohio in January, first choice will be to re-do the grips/handle/scales like the godfather did, nice look. Second will be to go out and find a tree that has that look like it's not afraid of any type of knife . . . . (that's because it's never met a BK before), & make some kindling sticks for the fireplace . . . ;)
Be safe.
