I just finished up this set last week.
fighter OAL - 13 1/4" w 8" blade, 4 1/4" dull clip.
hawk Oal- handle 18 1/2" , 8 1/2" from cutting edge to cutting edge, 2 1/4" cutting edges.
The damascus is all from the same billet. The blade, hawk head, guard, pommel and caps on the hawk, ( there's a cap on each end of the hawk handle) The steel is a 1080 & 15n20 billet, sandwiched between 2 - 1095 & 15n20 billets.
The curly maple handles and sheath are from the same board. The sheath cap, frog and pins are N/S and the inlay is sterling silver.
Second pic shows the sheath.

Thanks for lookin,

Bill

Bill, Thats a dandy pair!!! You put alot of work into both... How'd you do the hawk, out of a solid bar or forge weld?

Ray

That's a very nice set! I particularly like the way the damascus looks on the hawk, the pattern is very balanced w/out being even a little symetrical. Nice job. :)

Thanks for the nice compliments.

Ray, there's quite a bit of time in this set, thats for sure. I made up a pretty big bar, cut off a chunk for the hawk and then forged the fighter out of the rest. Split and drifted the hole. I took a piece of axel and made the drift for the double bit hole shape. Hopefully it will last for a few more, it was a pain to get right.

Thanks,

Bill

Bill, I tried a hawk out of solid random damascus. Everytime I tried to drift it the damascus would start to seperate, both with and against the grain. I got a few dandy knife blades out of it. I had it plenty hot durring the drifting. Thats quite an acomplishment, the doubles are twice the pain...... Ray

Ray, I hear you on the separation, I've had a few billets shear myself when the drifting is almost complete. Sure does get aggravating after all the time making the steel, spliting and drifting, to have them give it up at the end. But I've found that welding heats and real slow drift movement is the answer. If I try to open one up to quickly she'll shear, reason being, that drift pulls heat from the billet real quick so after just a few moments the billets cooled enough so it doesn't stretch much and thats when everything tries to pull apart.

Thanks everyone very much, for the compliments

Bill
