Is this something new? Something made from old parts, or did Taylor have these made in a US plant?

Thanks for the info. I haven't paid a lot of attention to other makers, but it seems like they are all making collectables, instead of a "working man's knife", and at the prices some of them charge, is the day of a new, decently priced working knife over?

As newly manufactured in the U.S. reasonably priced goods? Perhaps. More and more it seems that the only makers staying afloat are headed for the higher end market niche of collectable/art knives with special cover materials and nostalgia markings.

But as for this ol Codger, my son who gave me a Chinese blactical Wal-Mart knife for Christmas got a new Schrade 106OT to EDC. I used my own EDC 897UH to violate the clampack myself. I keep thinking maybe the difference will someday become apparent to him.

I certainly have a large enough variety and supply of pre-2004 Schrades and Camillus' to last me the rest of my natural life. Yeah, I know that my collecting and purchasing knives from Schrade and Camillus does no good for the surviving U.S. cutleries, but their marketing target isn't me anyway. I am outside the scope of their "demographic".

EDIT: If you like the above knife, look closely at the large trapper that Camillus made for the Sears 100th Anniversary knife. I have one and the F&F is great. And they can be had for less than that TBLLC SFO, if you don't mind having a Sears/Camillus SFO.

I don't want the above knife, I was curious about the origin. I have several large Camillus trappers, will be adding a few more as time goes by.

Great Eastern makes a good user/collectable knife. I have two of them. One I got for Christmas & I am using it, a Muskrat Cuban with Twilight Acrylic handles. It has nice 1095 blades, though I think the finish work on the Canal Street knives are probably better, I like the 1095 better for a user.

I wish Canal Street would make some in 1095.

Happy New Year,
Dale

my understanding is that Canal Street Cutlery is owned and staffed by former Schrade employees. i have their ring opener in A2, a very well made little knife. i have wanted to buy their reverse gunstock, in part to support these former Schrade folks, but it has 420 stainless which could be soft for a real user. is this the same steel as latter day Schrade+ ? and if so, is the heat treat the same ? i.e. is performance the same as a Schrade+ knife ? roland

From what I heard from employees the 420HC steel that is in most of their runs is the same as the steel in the Schrade+ blades. They claim to use the same heat treat process but since I am not a metallurgist I will leave that to others more knowledgable than I. For those who are concerned about steel quality Canal Street regularly does runs using different higher end steels. For those who don't know Canal Street Cutlery is a small semi-custom knife manufacturer in Ellenville. A very few of Schrade's cutlers created the company in the original Ellenville Schrade plant. I'm not connected to the factory in any way but our town is not that big, so I do hear things occasionally.
