A very challenging knife build

I recently came across a very interesting knife. The first thing you notice is the huge blade, smallish and odd handle and massive guard. An armature knife you think. Then it gets more interesting when you realize that this is an integral knife with the massive 1/4" thick blade, broad guard and handle, all carved from a single piece of steel. Someone likely started with a massive block of steel, of about 7"x 0.75 x 20" and cut then ground it down into this shape Other than that we know nothing about it. No markings are shown anywhere; so feel free to step up and take a bow if you were the one who made this.

It's possible that it was forged and wouldn't necessarily have been whittled away from a much larger piece of steel.

I considered that, but that requires good forging skills as well. There wasn’t a weld mark or visible inclusion anywhere on this.

Either way I am left with amateur knife making by a very skilled machinist or smith.

I don't disagree. The finish work is very amateurish indeed.

Hard to tell without knife in hand how it was achieved, and even then may not be possible.

As you say, either way some other skills are apparent.
