I have a friend in Puerto Rico who paints for his artistic outlet, I take photos. Most of the time I take pictures of wildlife. I like to be outside and my favorite wildlife are birds. Sometimes though, I set up Still Life pictures. These have all sorts of objects from my house in them and can be a lot of work to set up but are always a lot of fun if they turn out. Sometimes though, they are pretty simple, like this one I took of my Annapurna Bowie, a Revolver (Ruger Service Six .38 Spl) and a few coins:

the colors and such were all washed out, the light stunk that day, but it still sort of captured the idea I had so I posted this on another forum my friend and I frequent. When he saw it, he quipped, "At one time, that was all a person needed to rule the world!" So that was sort of what I started calling it, "All I need..." but I figured that once it was taken and we had our laugh, that was that for the picture (sure I would look it over now and then but its race had been run). Then a surprise box came to me today from Puerto Rico:

I decided to break out all the old picture components (but the coins since I am broke until payday :() to take this shot. The note basically says he is giving me a knife, a gun and a few coins so I can rule the world. :o I was stunned. What a great gift from a great friend. It now has a place of honor on my wall and will for the rest of my life.

here is a better shot of the painting for you all to see, actual size is 6.75" wide x 4.5" tall

That is a very cool painting! I like it alot, and your friend is talented.

He really is... there are a bunch of his paintings that I really like.
He also paints a "Dark Side" painting for every one of his more upbeat ones.
I haven't asked if this one was upbeat, dark side or he also does what he calls middle ones that I guess don't require a follow up/rebuttal.
Some of the pairings are really interesting. ;)

What a wonderful painting! Being a gift from the heart makes it even more precious.

I don't have mod superpowers yet, so one of the others will have to move this over.

It really is and honestly, this is the first time in my short life of nearly 48 years that anyone has done something like this for me, something handmade and from the heart. Right now I can't stop looking it over so I have it propped up on my desk, next to my iMac.

Like I said, it did have a little to do with actual product since I have pictures of my AB in there but I really should have put it in the Cantina instead. Sorry. I was really just that excited though that the ole brain sort of wasn't really engaged when I posted. :o (when is it ever some of you are asking ;))
Always nice to get something personal like that.
It REALLY is. I think by now an by my reply replies you can tell I am pretty overwhelmed. :D

This thread has been going through my mind.

A few thoughts.

1. Location - It is about a painting of an HI blade. Seems to me it fits well either here or in the Cantina. Other mods may be more up on current policy but the location doesn't bother me.

2. The value of a gift - A gift given from the heart, one that may not have been easy to give, has significant power and value. I have khukuris that I've bought, and ones that I have received as gifts. The ones that came as gifts have a bit of extra magic. These thoughts have inspired me to give a number of khukuris also. It is one way I know I can add significant value to an already magnificant piece of craftsmanship.

3. The powers of a gift - Contrary to the nature of many things in life that we might want, we do not have the power to get a gift for ourselves. Our powerlessness in this regard is one of the things that makes a gift from outside ouselves valuable.

4. The other side of gifts - Although we are powerless to make ourselves get a gift, we do have within our power the ability to give them to others. For a meaningful gift this often takes money/time/effort/thought. It is the amount of onself invested in the gift that gives it the added value. A superficial examination might suggest that since there is a cost incurred and no assured benefit, it might be better not to give. However, most people who try find it very rewarding, even if there is no identifiable reciprocation or tit-for-tat. The act of giving something from the heart changes the giver as well as the receiver.

One other thing:

Used to, when the talk on the forum turned to guns, many of the forumites talking about their latest and greatest modern marvels, Bill would mention the old 38 revolver that he had possessed for years. As far as I know that was his only firearm.

I'm sure most of you know the old adage about the man with only one gun.

Very True Howard, one of my favorite things to do is to either find or make that gift that you KNOW the recipient is going to really appreciate. It is especially rewarding, at least to me, if the person doesn't really expect a gift from you...

Well said Howard!
