Mudman and I did a quick overnighter a few hours after I got back from the East Coast. He pulled an all-nighter and we made the best out of it. Left early Christmas Eve and came back Christmas Day.

Our Lord’s Candle

Birch Leaf Cercocarpus, commonly known as mountain mahogany

Mudman Leather Works

Mud made me a cool leather neck sheath for my Old Hickory paring knife

Camp Craft

A log cabin fire for a quick blaze

First…a little tinder

Made some Mormon Tea we found…it had a KICK!

By this time, the Mormon Tea was taking effect

My camp was a garbage bag stuffed with leaves. I built a small windbreak out of my night logs that I would sleep next to. As the night went on, my windbreak slowly disappeared.

We waited for HAM

Our friend the California Sycamore

…and the night!

Shredded inner bark

I didn’t know water was dark colored

Mud pie

My hobo water boiler

Lean-to fire

Teepee fire

Log cabin for a quick boil (super quick)

Viking Axe

Hike out

Christmas Tree

Great stuff guys and as usual, the food and fire take center stage. Mudman...I really like your shelter.

Thanks for the pix, you guys are very lucky to be able to get out and go even for one night, how I miss those days!

Cool trip. Gonna steal that garbage bag leaf bed idea from you for my next outing

Try it. Take two if you want a deluxe bed. I've been using it for over two years. Pine needles, dry or green grass, mixed with dirt works too. It just needs to cut conduction. I usually use the same garbage bag for two or more trips before I change them out.

Looks like an awesome trip guys. Lots of fire craft which is always cool. Can't say much bad about that Ontario, after watching Grizzly Adams a lot as a kid I spent a lot of time roaming the woods with an Ontario butcher knife in a home made goat skin sheath. It wasn't until years later and a very much deteriorated situation in my teens that a guard became important to me. For several years that Old Hickory handled all of my cutting needs in the woods.

Show us how they do it in Michigan!
